The junior and senior chambers of commerce have merged into one body to be known as the Sidney Chamber of Commerce. Over 90 percent of local business men are expected in the new membership, with dues cut to 10 dollars yearly. Four committees report good 1931 response and the group plans weekly meetings and a busy year of civic activity including conventions.

China, India and Argentina were featured at a Sidney Methodist church program on the World Mission of Christianity. Leaders from Chungking West China Calcutta India and Argentina spoke on social and religious changes, including India’s abolition of child marriage and widowhood, and intermarriage across castes becoming more common.

In 1930 the 4 cent tax began, bringing over nine million dollars. 1929 to 1930 rose about 127 percent. Monthly peak occurred in August 1930 with 960,243.45 dollars.

A new Piggly Wiggly grocery opens this week in the Doran building on West Illinois Street after a weeklong closure for moving groceries and fixtures. The store features a meat department run by Piggly Wiggly and updated equipment and fixtures. Denver office experts assisted with interior design and shelving arrangements aligned to Piggly Wiggly specifications.
The U S Department of Agriculture outlook report forecasts a gradual domestic demand recovery for farm products this year with lower production costs. It notes world economic weakness likely ending by mid summer, ample marketing credit, low farm wages and cheaper materials. Wheat prospects remain discouraging unless global yields drop, as world production outpaces consumption and carryovers stay high.
A letter from C. G. Olson in Russia describes vast farming operations. One farm uses 210 tractors and 67 combines and plans to sow 143 750 acres of wheat oats and soy beans. Olson notes over 200 such farms and predicts Russian grain will affect market development.
Sidney Riflers beat Kimball 2636 to 2413 on Tuesday at Wal-Bur-hall local range. Melvin Sweet led with 278 points and H E Bauman added 272. other scores include Don Brewer 271 J J Treinen 266 and Douglas Boyd 264 in a competitive club event. Sidney hosts Sterling Rifle Club in March.
M. B. Morfeld, long associated with Stevens Van Engelen since the store’s opening, is promoted to Manager of the Scottsbluff branch. He succeeds Robert Spence, who died recently, and will take charge promptly. Edgar Sayre, shoe department manager, will become first man under Mr. Liggett.

The Sidney Boy Scouts mark the 21st anniversary with a week of events at the Methodist church basement starting Sunday, featuring a pageant The Eight Ages of a Scout. A basketball game against Kimball follows a board of reviews Tuesday and a court of honor Wednesday night at Sidney High School. Thursday is school day with demonstrations, Friday is home day, and Saturday hosts a 2 pm swimming carnival with Scottsbluff.

The unit system permits future additions without harming appearance, featuring a large auditorium, offices, class rooms, home economics, a commercial room, and library space planned across two floors.
