The Sidney Band Auxiliary launches a drive to raise about 4800 for new uniforms to replace older outfits. Under Dean Killian the sixty piece ensemble has made notable progress including recent concert success and community support.
No opposition was filed for two retiring Sidney City Council members J. Fred Thompson and Jack H. Lowe. Petitions were on file last week, no other nominations emerged. Filing deadline passed last Saturday. Primary on March 11 and general election on April 1 despite no contest. Observers noted the absence of additional names despite fourteen candidates in the prior primary run-off.
The Silver Belles and Beaux Square Dance Club will present a costumed square dancing exhibition at the Youth Center on Thursday night. Faust, chairman of the center’s board, urges strong attendance and notes special programs for Juniors.
Cheyenne County commissioners consider hiring professional firms to reappraise property, focusing on Sidney and possibly another town as a trial. Costs cited range from six to eight thousand dollars for partial review or about thirty thousand for a full county reappraisal. Assessor Roy Gish favors external help for pace and accuracy but notes mixed opinions. County values exceed thirty million, with Sidney around six million. reforms could raise taxes, not just lower them, and a card-keeping system is proposed requiring expert support.
Early 1952 March of Dimes results from Cheyenne County show more than 7000 dollars with Sidney leading at over 3000. Sioux Ordnance Depot surpassed 1951 totals with over 1500, Lodgepole 1250, Potter 1108, Sunol 175, while Gurley Lorenzo and Dalton had no returns yet. County director John W. Martinosky expects final totals to exceed 8000 and will issue a full report next week.
1951 guidance from H F Benjamin of the Scotts Bluff Social Security Field Office explains self employed individuals with net earnings of 400 or more must file a social security tax report on Schedule C with income tax. Not covered are farm and ranch owners and self employed professionals. Schedule C forms were mailed only to taxpayers with reported business profit or loss.
About ten thousand Cornhuskers are expected at Bixby Park Long Beach California on Saturday March 1 to celebrate the 85th anniversary of Nebraska Admission Day.
Vern R. McManes, 65, died February 9 after three weeks in a local hospital. Funeral services were held Monday at The Craig Mortuary, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery. He was born April 14, 1886, in Lanham Nebraska, worked for the railroad, did carpentry, and farmed near Sidney. Surviving: widow Maude Hellyer (m 1912. Sioux City), three children Floyd Miller of Sidney, Russell Lomax of Seattle, Douglas McManes of Sidney, two grandchildren, and two sisters. He married Mary Callaway in 1934 after Mrs. McManes died in 1932.
Sidney merchants launch a monthly Lucky Shoppers Day with an acquainting quiz. Residents receive a numbered card and search stores for matching numbers to win prizes by naming each store manager. A grand cash jackpot may be revealed by some firms. Participating firms list included.
Donald Logan Barker, hospital man in the U S Navy attached to the Marine Corps in Korea, was wounded in action February 7 reports from Vice Admiral L T Dubose. The message says he was not evacuated, suggesting the wound is not serious, with further updates to his parents, Mr and Mrs Ron Barker.
A slate of 12 nominees was prepared for the Cheyenne County Extension Supervising board organization meeting at 1 15 o clock Friday in the Sidney City Auditorium Legion rooms. Two members from each district northeast northwest southeast and southwest were to be chosen with districts defined by Union Pacific and Burlington railroads. Nominees include Mrs Walter Dykman Lodgepole Mrs Sam Irwin Sidney Paul Mortensen Gurley Grafton Crabb Lodgepole Mrs Bert Walker Sidney Joe Bonkiewicz Jr Lodgepole Mrs Art McMillen Sidney Karl Kurz Sidney Northwest Ivan Walker Dalton John Meyer Sidney Mrs Earl Anderson Pet a and Mrs E Osborn Dalton. The day opens with Constitution consideration and election of board members, with tentative plans subject to voters at the meeting.
Allen E Irons faces a trial in Banner County district court today on charges of placing his brand on six head of cattle belonging to the late Bert Rogers. County Attorney Robert G Simmons Jr says the case may be the first under false branding laws this century. Irons was Rogers ranch foreman at the time of the alleged misbranding.
The National Association of Wheat Growers will hold a convention at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Denver this week. It runs Thursday through Saturday and is disclosed to aid western Nebraska producers nearby the Panhandle.
Top winter event, the annual Fireman’s Ball, takes place Thursday night in the Sidney City Auditorium. Good attendance is expected as the event closes the Volunteer Fire Department’s yearly financial drive led by drive chairman Don Shipman, with the Lee Williams Band performing.
The county court house will be closed all day today Tuesday in observance of Lincoln's Birth day.
Cheyenne County residents will be invited to join the national Agricultural Conservation Program in 1952. Chairman Bert W Wiegers urges farmers to review existing plans with county agents and district supervisors, set urgent practices, and align conservation efforts with 1952 production goals.
Sidney Lions present their second annual Minstrel Show at the City Auditorium with eight o clock curtain. Host Interlocutor Charles Hancock opens the show with End Men including Paul Faust and Leroy Johnson. A magician Leonard Glamm and Step n Fetchit Bernie Goldstein appear. Music from Bill Satchmo Lowe with Ron Barker and band features trombone solos. Lodgepole Polecat Quartet Hal Saums Burnell Saums Dale Wise Don Wise perform. Neeley School dancers Barbara Hyde and others perform. Production staff includes C H Babbitt Marilyn Harper Jo Neeley Harold Curry Bud Madsen H Glenn Spearn Carl Ziegler and C H Babbitt.
Three new oil producers were added in Cheyenne County over the weekend on land leased to The Ohio Oil Co. The Jurgens No. 1 in the Kugler field and Birdwell No. 2 in the Reimers field were drilled by Ohio, while Elsasser C-1 is a Gulf Plains Oil Co. venture on a farm out from Ohio. The Elsasser lies between North Sidney and Dorman fields, expanding production along the range of hills about one mile northwest of Sidney. It likely will result in increased output in the region.

Drill results from Ohio and Texas oil fields show ongoing testing in multiple wells. Jurgens No 1 and Birdwell No 2 reach the J sand with substantial oil recovered in tests, while Elsasser C-1 yields oil and gas cut mud. Government No 4 on Sioux Ord has reached 900 feet. Larson No 1 in South Potter reports 88 barrels in 27 hours. Shell lines up completion work after perforating D sand in Larson No 1.
Sharps and Flats, a popular entertainment unit, play at the American Legion Club in Sidney for the past two nights and will close the engagement tonight. They were booked last minute with little advertising but have drawn big crowds and praise for their inimitable music.
The Smorgasbord program, interrupted by holidays, resumes at the VFW Club every Tuesday night with serving starting at 6 30. Plates cost 1 50, making it a top food bargain of the year. The VETSCO feature continues Wednesdays at 8 30 to boost entertainment.
