J B Ruttner of Sidney reports a colony of beavers on Lodgepole Creek has built a 15 foot dam and flooded a 600 foot long by four foot deep lake. The animals felled over 100 trees in a pileup of bark and timber, prompting Ruttner to vow action against the beavers.
The western Nebraska weekly crop report shows optimism as snow boosts moisture for topsoil. Winter wheat benefits from recent snowfall while soil absorption improves. several counties report farm-property auctions and seed testing. irrigation interest remains high.
At the Cheyenne County Red Cross quarterly meeting, plans for the March fundraising campaign were outlined. W A Lyons led the session as county chairman with reports from the secretary treasurer and home service director, and a disaster response team roster was announced. LaVern Anthony will attend a Denver synchronized swimming clinic to introduce a new program at the Sidney pool.

Victoria Barajas 24 of Minatare sues Mr and Mrs Cliff Parker over a July 21 1953 collision two and one half miles west of Dalton. Barajas seeks 3999 for wages 15080 for pain 69300 for future wages and 10537.40 for medical bills declaring Parker negligent. Both women recall little of the crash at a blind county road intersection with a tree line obscuring vision. Witness Hankins testified both cars traveled about 45 to 50 mph. Barajas rested after three witnesses. Jury members were named including Jurgens Burr Kahl Heeg Armstrong McVicker Lamm Draper Larson Ahlischwede Hazelwood Minshall.
Boyd's Cigar Store in Sidney marks 35 years of operation at 812 10th Ave in the Oberfelder Building. Harry Marsh has managed since 1926, after Vern Greenwood started the shop in 1922 as a Cheyenne branch affiliate. The store has long served railroad men, soda fountain patrons, and a mix of tobacco and liquor sales under a C liquor license. Marsh praises the Boyd organization and invites customers to visit for thanks, noting no special events due to liquor regulations.
A Sidney housewife says she talked with Leslie Irvin the Mad Dog killer who escaped a Princeton Indiana jail. Irvin, wanted for six Indiana murders, was said to have passed Nebraska after fleeing. He surrendered in San Francisco and is to be returned to Indiana authorities.

A Sidney cafe cook attempted suicide in a local hotel this morning. He cut his arm with a small knife before police arrived, officers took him to the police station, treated the wound with mercurochrome, and released him.
Wytex Oil Corporation reports expansion in the Maley Field five miles south of Sidney with the Harlan No. 1 producer and a J Sand drill stem test underway. Cheyenne County oil activity includes Love-Miller Drilling's Thompson No. 1 wildcat near Sioux Ordnance Depot road showing seven feet of promising sand, while other wildcats and existing wells proceed in the region and Kimball County reporting Lukassen No. 1 gas and oil in Kimball nearby.

January contacts reached 1,650, up 25 percent from December and 90 percent higher than a year ago, while transient traffic fell. Clerical workers remain slightly in short supply, and no near rise in demand is expected in the next 60 days.
Sidney youths Gaylen Bates and Ronald Smith, both 16, faced charges of breaking and entering Murrell Crosby’s farm home on January 26 and pleaded guilty. County judge C W Smith ordered custody to the State Board of Control, with a commitment likely to the Nebraska State Training School for Boys in Kearney. Alfred Banks, 19, of Sidney, awaits county court hearing on related charges. he is free on 1100 dollars bond.
