Panhandle blizzard caused sleet and freezing rain across Cheyenne County and western Nebraska on Monday. The storm slowed traffic, fouled roads, and iced surfaces while the weather bureau urged caution. a 1946 Ford rolled on an icy highway near Sidney but the driver escaped injury.
Students from across the county gathered in Sidney for the fourth annual Boys and Girls County Government Day. A blizzard forced early departure after partial program, with talks by Cheyenne County officials and a mock trial. Mayor Jack Lowe filled in as principal speaker, urging youth to trust their future while enjoying the present and preparing for responsibilities. District Judge John Kuns and Legion leaders introduced events and spoke to the group.
Secretary of State Frank Marsh reports more than six thousand brand owners have not renewed their brands by February 1 as required. He warns failure to renew risks loss of ownership and potential title disputes and lawsuits for cattle bearing those brands.
Seven cooperators with the Cheyenne County Soil Conservation District will be cited at the fourth annual Recognition Banquet to be held February 17 at the Yendis Cafe Blue Room. An organized agriculture program is planned in Chappell with cooperation from the University of Nebraska Agricultural Extension Service and the Western Organized Agriculture committee. The day opens with a 10 a.m. coffee hour, Tom Carter presiding, featuring Dr. Marvel L. Baker on research implications. Afternoon sessions cover wheat disease and insects for men and interior decoration for women, ending with a banquet headlined by Judge Phillip Gilliam of the Denver juvenile court.
A bold break in at Rudy's IGA in Ordville last week saw robbers roll an 800 pound safe a short distance to a vehicle, load it, and flee near nearby dwellings. The safe later appeared dumped in Hershey Nebr. cash and checks totaling about twelve hundred dollars were taken along with some records. store officials recovered insurance papers and worked to reconcile receipts while guards at nearby Sioux Ordnance Depot monitored the area. Police theorize the burglars knew the layout well to execute the theft quickly and quietly.
C R Porter cert manager of the Nebraska Crop Improvement Association reports ample supply of Nemaha and Cherokee oats seed with limited other varieties. 4500 bushels of Mo 0 205 foundation seed from UNL Foundation Seed Division have been allocated. Eastern Nebraska favors Nemaha Cherokee Clinton Marion. irrigated areas favor Ajax Overland and Andrew. Brunker suits dryland western thirds.
Two more wells are underway on the Charles Krueger farm five miles west of Sidney as Chicago Corp and Republic Natural Gas push the Krueger No 1 through the D sand. Tests yielded 3200 and 4200 feet of oil, with J sand showing water and gas at 32 000 cubic feet per day. No 2 and No 3 aim to extend production southwest amid strong optimism about a thick, permeable sand section. Delaware Drilling Co. handles the rig work, with one moved from Schnell No 1 east of Sidney. Local leaseholders monitor the operation closely as the wells are drilled as tight holes.
The Ohio Oil Co reports oil in both D and J sands at Johnson No. 6, a pool well five miles northeast of Sidney. D sand showed 3,700 feet oil in test from 4,470 feet, J sand 1,740 feet oil from 4,600 to 4,610 feet, with DST No 3 yielding 1,440 feet oil and salt water. coring began Monday at Uptogrove No B-11 seven miles north of Sidney to target the D sand.
Motor vehicle owners must obtain 1953 license tabs this week. State officials set February 15 as the cutoff before cars are stopped for failure to display the new tabs.
Cheyenne County's 1953 March of Dimes collection stands at 13036.22 as of Monday, with future receipts not expected to alter the result significantly. Campaign Director John Martinosky notes a statewide statement will follow, detailing communities and project allocations including Sidney, Lodge Pole, Potter, Dalton, Gurley, Sunol, and Sioux Ordnance Depot contributions. Edward Pace a 47 year old Dallas oil man who drilled the Sidney airport wildcat and engaged in multiple ventures was killed in a three vehicle crash near Mt Vernon Missouri. His wife Mayita 45 also died in the accident. Two St Louis men in the other car were seriously injured. Pace formerly resided in Sidney and Dallas taking leases in the Williston Basin after courtly oil deals.
The first Skelly service station since before the war will open in Sidney on Friday and Saturday at 505 Illinois Street. Town and Country Oil, owned by John Underdown, will run the outlet with Louis Schnell as manager. The building also houses a restaurant and two apartments. The grand opening features free door prizes and a chance to win items such as a picnic kit and electric appliances. Special offer includes a free grease ticket with every 10 gallons of gas purchased during the event.
The Dalton High School junior class play runs Monday and Tuesday February 16 and 17. Rehearsals are underway under the direction of Superintendent Suchsland.
A Cheyenne County area of about thirty six square miles west and southwest of Sidney is expected to see oil and gas activity this year. It includes the Krueger No 1 discovery, the West Sidney gas field with five shut-in wells, and a farmout drilled gasser near Sidney. Ohio Oil Co officials are cautious yet hopeful about expanding gas prospects while more wells may be drilled along the field’s fringe.

The D sand test yielded about one million cubic feet per day. drill stem test showed rapid surface rise and a tight sand, signaling a potential new gas sand link between Logan County Colorado and Cheyenne County.
The thirty six square mile area is leased for oil and gas with three dry holes to date. Shut in gas wells include Woods No 1 Spicknell No 1 State No 1 Witters No 1 Anderson No 1 Chambers No 1. Spicknell and Woods show best gas, D and J sands on Spickwell well. Unitization and reserves studies crucial before opening a field. gas contracts likely require twenty five year terms. Alliance City considered as potential Chevet County gas customer.
