Scotts Bluff school board votes 5 to 1 to retain Otto G. Ruff as superintendent for two more years. Daniel Ramsey provides the sole dissent, saying democracy means the majority rules and declines further explanation.
At the Lincoln meeting, Cheyenne County Assessor Roy Gish and Commissioner George Fleming backed removing many small personal property items from schedules to cut workload. The new guide raises prices on tractors and machinery by 30 percent and on 1992-64 tractors and machinery by 20 percent, while grain and livestock values mostly dip from last year. Specifics include corn 1.20 a bushel, soybeans 2.50, prairie hay 10 a ton, alfalfa 16 a ton, and various cattle, horse, sheep, turkey, and poultry values set across grades and ages.
Funeral services for Gerhard George Egging 75 of Sidney were held Wednesday at St Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Anthony Egging and Father Albert Albel officiating. Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery. Rosary was recited Tuesday evening at Gehrig Funeral Home. Egging born Jan 16 1880 in Groessen Holland moved to Nebraska in 1904 and to Cheyenne County in 1917. He married Petronella Hieken Jan 7 1909 and had 12 children 22 grandchildren and several surviving relatives. He was a Knight of Columbus fourth degree and trustee in the third degree. Contributions were requested to St Patrick's School Fund. Pallbearers named were George Fahey Ed Smigel Ed Shonka Larry Clinton Joe Vogt and Dr C B Dorwart.

Albert Nimtz reveals the Sidney High School top graduates led by valedictorian Janet Hartman with 97.5 average. Salutatorian Mike Frost holds 97.1, while Reba Kinne is class orator at 96.7. Also honored are Deanna Moseman 95.3 and Donna Meyer 93, with no expected change to the top five.
Denver driver Dean Darling, 30, was stopped in Nebraska last year for speeding, failed to appear in court, and a warrant was issued. Sheriff Bill Schulz spotted Darling in Sidney and arrested him, leading to a guilty plea and a $15 fine plus costs.
The Sidney Civic Music Association met to plan the membership campaign to run in Sidney from April 4 to April 16. Dean Killion was elected president for the coming year, with J H McNish as secretary and Leonard Fine as treasurer continuing in their roles. Organizational chairs named include Mrs Rudy Munderloh Mrs Gerald Snow and Mrs Roy Oliverius. Dinner chair is Mrs Jack Knicely and prospect chair is Mrs L L Pippett.
The State Board of Educational Lands and Funds announces a February 16 auction at 9 a.m. offering 33 residential lots from Sidney's western edge school section. No legal descriptions were provided in the sale notice.
The Rotary District 176 conference in Sidney closes with a gala banquet tonight. 141 Rotarians from 19 clubs and 103 Rotary Anns registered, still under 300 due to a heavy Nebraska snowstorm. Roy Weaver of Denver, Rotary International director, headlines with other events including tours, awards, and the governor’s ball after tonight’s banquet.
The Nebraska Division of the Union Pacific Railroad will hold a safety party and rally in Sidney on March 5. The division won first place in UP system wide safety for 1954 with a low 2.14 reportable injuries per million man hours. A Sidney event at the City Auditorium will feature prizes a variety show and dancing.
Burel Kinney a Sidney trucker has filed a judgment suit in Cheyenne County District Court against Grand Island Finance Co seeking damages from allegedly usurious interest on two promissory notes. One note dated June 23 1954 for 7000 dollars and another dated August 18 1954 for 11246 dollars are cited.
The SOD adopts a staggered pay time scheme beginning this week. Army Ordnance employees will continue to be paid biweekly, but half the workforce will be paid each week. Depot officials cite Army regulation requiring payment periods with about half the workers paid weekly. Depot authorities expect local merchants to approve the change.
Funeral services for Mary Kate Schafer 79 who died Feb 3 at Grand Island were held today at 2 p m from the Craig Mortuary Reverend Robert L Townsend officiated Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery She was born July 23 1875 in Ashland Neb married Amos R Schafer May 20 1894 They lived in Hebron Wood River Bruning and Arapahoe Neb where he ran flour mills They moved to Sidney in 1944 with daughter Dorothy Littlton and stayed mostly there In 1954 she lived with Virginia Neuhart in Grand Island until her death Survivors include seven children Harriette Hall Boone Ia Harry N Greybull Wyo Frank O St Joseph Mo Neyhart Grand Island George D and Victor C Wymore Neb and Mrs Littlton Sidney One sister Josephine Biggerstaff Kennewick Wash two brothers T H Carter and C B Carter Hebron Neb also survive She had 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Directors of the Ohio Oil Co propose raising authorized common stock from 7 million to 20 million shares. At a Findlay Ohio meeting the board said if shareholders approve at the May 6 annual meeting they will implement a two for one stock split. President J C Donnell Jr. stated the move should widen distribution and improve marketability.
Oil activity in Cheyenne County is rising with 16 current well attempts noted this morning. Ten sites in the northwest near four new pools late in 1954. multiple wildcats including Ryan Oil, Miracle-Fifer, Wytex, and others plan to drill or cure soon.
Donald Thiess was named chairman of Potter's 1955 Heart Fund Campaign announced by A. Q. Schim mell state chairman. The drive runs February 1 to 28 in Potter, part of a national effort with Heart Campaigns in thousands of communities. Potter American Legion Post sponsors the drive.
Nebraska lawmakers consider LB 220 to let Sioux Villa surplus funds be paid to Sidney’s general fund. City Manager Murrey Fuller says the $40,000 surplus, from the 173 unit low rent project, could grow with continued operation. The bill would also extend rentals to households with income up to six times the rent. Other Nebraska cities with housing projects include Alliance and McCook.
The January jury term in Cheyenne County District Court will open tomorrow with Judge John Kuns calling the docket. The term was delayed a week due to jury business in North Platte. No jury cases are expected this month, but several civil actions will be presented to a jury next month.
