Soaring costs push Sidney to raise utility rates

City of Sidney officials say inflation and rising operating costs force proposed increases in electric, sewer, and water charges. If approved, electricity would rise about 25 percent, water about 40 percent, and sewer about 53 percent, with computer-verified figures showing decades of revenue growth lagging higher expenses in all departments.

Trails West National Historical Park proposed in NebWyoming

Rep. Virginia Smith introduces legislation to create a Trails West National Historical Park from Ash Hollow near Ogallala Nebraska to Ft. Laramie Wyoming. The four Nebraskas sites Ash Hollow Mud Springs Courthouse and Jail Rocks Chimney Rock and Wyoming Ft Laramie would be preserved, with tourism expected to rise and $2 million in annual revenue. A feasibility study will be done by the National Park Service as the bill goes to the Interior and Insular Affairs Committee.

Cold weekend ahead as Nebraska braces for chill

The Associated Press reports seasonable sunny weather may give way to continued cold in Nebraska over the weekend. A central high pressure system sits over Nebraska with northerly winds five to 15 mph. Early temperatures ranged from about five below zero in the northwest to ten above in the southeast. Tonight should be clearer and less cold, with lows near zero in the northeast and zero to ten above elsewhere. Saturday looks warmer with clear to partly cloudy skies and highs in the mid 20s to low 30s. The National Weather Service recorded a 19 degree high in Omaha on Thursday and an overnight low of 15 below zero at Valentine.

Young wins 500 meter Olympic gold in Innsbruck
