Lincoln panel weighs malpractice and mental health bills

Blood Services Team Visits Sidney For Local Donor Drive

Technicians from Blood Services of Cheyenne Wyoming conducted a community blood drive in Sidney. Memorial Hospital sponsors multiple drives yearly offering residents aged 17 to 65 the chance to donate blood. Chamber plans member drive in Cheyenne County

The Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce board met in Lodgepole on Tuesday night. They announced a membership drive starting within two weeks, voted to underwrite an Action Day for county residents, and backed a Nebraska association proposal to broaden revenue bond law. They will not fill the chamber manager vacancy, aiming to end the fiscal year without a deficit. Mary Merck was appointed interim executive secretary to operate the chamber this year.

Permits Slow as Sidney Issues $24,300 January Total

Sidney City Inspector Dean Starr issued building permits valued at about 24 300 in January marking a 49 percent drop from January 1974. Major commercial permits included a 14 000 remodeling for Bakers Tire and Alignment Service at 174 Illinois Street and a 5 000 sign for Town and Country Market at 2020 10th Avenue. Other permits covered fences, basements, a bathroom, a garage addition, and roof trusses at several Sidney addresses.

NTSB to take depositions in Fremont Pathfinder blast

The National Transportation Safety Board will send investigators to Fremont next week to take depositions after the Pathfinder Hotel disaster that killed 18 and injured over 40. A natural gas leak near the building is blamed for the Jan. 10 blast and fire. a final report is expected in six to eight months, though transit of gas from wellhead to meter may extend the investigation.

Opposition Rises to ESU Legislation in Lincoln Hearing

More than a dozen witnesses urged Nebraska legislature’s Education Committee to reject or modify LB726 proposed by Rep Gerald Koch to revamp Educational Service Units. Critics warned against appointing ESU boards and cutting the ESU mill levy, while supporters argued for a more responsive ESU board and cost charging for services. Other actions included LB758 for an emergency state school cash fund and LB760 redesignating schools as vocational or correspondence.

Land use maps aid conservation says NRD expert

Dr. Phil Harlan of the University of Nebraska told the South Platte NRD board that land use maps and up to date soils data are essential for good conservation planning and that aerial soil surveys cannot measure erosion though they show ground condition. He noted Cheyenne County lacks a modern soil survey unlike Deuel and Kimball Counties. The bill would fund state support for federal soil surveys to complete county inventories within about a dozen years.

ABP lawyers plan conviction appeal after fraud verdict

ABP Inc. and founder Frank R West were found guilty on multiple counts of mail and wire fraud in a Jan 21 verdict by Judge Robert W Denney. ABP faces fines and costs. West faces fines, two years jail terms suspended, and probation. Attorneys plan appeals and probe for a new trial amid bankruptcy proceedings and prior dismissals.

January Snow Moisture Shortage at High Plains Lab

A monthly High Plains Agricultural Lab report notes scarce moisture despite frequent storms. Only 0.12 inches of precipitation fell in January, with 6 inch snows on Jan 25 yielding 0.8 inches and 0.4 inches on Jan 1. The coldest day was Jan 7 at 14 below zero and Jan 24 reached 71 degrees.
