Sidney youth pleads guilty in extortion case transfer
An 18 year old Sidney resident pled guilty to using the mails for attempted extortion and was bound over to federal court on a $1500 bond. James Harden admitted guilt before U S Commissioner J L Thorpe after a trap photographed the money left for Mrs Ed Swanson, wife of a Sidney businessman, in a phone book. Federal officers described the staged drop at 14th and Illinois Street, the chase, and Harden's past as a Sidney High School athlete. If convicted he faces up to $500 fine and two years in prison. Postal inspectors aided the investigation from North Platte and Grand Island.

Arthur Holms 72 Dies in Phoenix Rites Saturday
Arthur Holms 72 a former Sidney resident died yesterday afternoon in a Phoenix Arizona hospital after a heart attack Sunday. He homesteaded in Wyoming about 41 years ago then worked in John Deere Plow Co service in Sidney and later owned the John Deere Co at Kimball before retiring ten years ago and moving to Phoenix. Survivors include wife Alberta a brother Earl Holmes and sister Mrs Mable Merrill of Waterloo Iowa. Masonic funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 am from Hansen and Lundberg Mortuary Sunnyslope Phoenix. Mr and Mrs Robert J Wait Mr and Mrs Lester Elkinton and John Spence left this morning for Phoenix to attend the final rites.

Chappell Farm Fire Causes Hundreds in Damages
A fire on Kenneth Groves’s Chappell area farm caused between 500 and 600 dollars in damage. Sparks from an earlier trash burn ignited a small shed a combine and fence posts. The blaze was spotted about 11:25 am by Groves family and no injuries were reported.

Sidney will gain a livestock sales pavilion on Union Pacific property near the stock yards after six years without one. Emerald Pete Rapp, the auctioneer, says two buildings and pens are planned with footings poured for the main sale ring building. A hog and sheep barn will hold 48 pens and 60 pens outside are for cattle use. Operations are hoped to start in April for regular Saturday sales. The last pavilion was run by A B Rapp six years ago.
