Wildlife habitat help in pothole region farm drainage
The Soil Conservation Service supports drainage in pothole country when wildlife values are considered, outlining policies from 1956 and noting districts cover 78 of 86 pothole counties. Since operations began, over 500 thousand acres have been drained with SCS help, while some 14 thousand ponds add permanent water for waterfowl and agriculture, complemented by wildlife habitat work totaling 83,500 acres and ongoing biologist-led measures in three states.

Stubble Mulching to Prevent Erosion in Wheat Lands
University of Nebraska agronomist C R Fenster explains stubble mulching keeps surface residues like straw or weed growth to shield soil from wind and water erosion. He notes 1500 to 2000 pounds of surface residue per acre and proper tillage tools to maximize surface coverage while maintaining seedbed integrity.
