County farmers will attend sessions this week to learn the 1935 corn hog program aims to stabilize production and prices. The plan requires a ten percent adjustment below the 1932 33 corn base with up to 30 percent of the corn base eligible for benefits. Signers can divert land removed from corn to other crops or increase plowable acreage. Continued on Page 2.
Sidney country club membership committee begins a drive to enroll at least 125 people for 1935 with a $15 yearly fee. Reported good progress on day one, aims for record enrollment amid crowded course and favorable California golf crowd.
John Schulenberg, longtime local farmer four miles west and a half mile south of Sidney, plans a public sale next Thursday February 7. He and his family move to Richardson county and will auction their cattle and belongings. Rapp and Fredericksen act as auctioneers with James Reisdorff as clerk. Sale starts at noon.
The Kimball schools present a 40 piece concert band in an afternoon program at the city auditorium on Sunday February 3 at 3 o clock. An exchange concert with Sidney follows on February 24. Admission is free for music fans and supporters of student musicians.
Authorities urge car owners to purchase 1935 auto license plates as the February 1 deadline nears. The notice warns that no 1934 plates will be overlooked and drivers should keep cars off the streets until compliant.
The board of reviews for Boy Scouts Cork has been appointed by Prof. J. W. Neilsen. Members include Walter Cork chairman A Story troop 90 C W Smith troop 99 J J Sheaff and J C Rosse. They will meet monthly to award deserving scouts for their advancement.
The Sidney Loan and Building Association declares a 2 percent dividend for the last half of 1934 and adds 1000 to a special reserve fund. Secretary Leslie Neubauer says the group is in strong shape amid industry adversity, crediting careful management and loan practices. The association has applied for a federal charter and hopes to federalize soon after years of cautious progress.
The North Platte Valley Marketing association completed its last turkey loading this week with shipments from Sidney at the Columbine Tractor and Implement building and other points in Wheatland Torrington Lusk Gering Bridgeport and Kimball. Four cars were loaded across seven points setting a season record of 23. Growers received 20 cents a pound for prime young turkeys 16 cents for old hens and choice 14 cents for old toms and 12 cents for commercial. The advance price compares favorably with earlier shipments signaling continued good prices through the final shipment.
Frank O'Connell announces that the U S biological survey will begin a Nebraska duck population survey immediately to provide data for a possible revision of the open season. He notes the survey is nationwide and aims to place real facts before the commission for the first time to shape a more practicable open season.
St Patrick's academy cagers crushed Goodview 32 to 5 on Tuesday, with Goodview only tallying five charity throws. Hargens scored six field goals in the second half to lead the Pats, while Kent and Zwickl added nine points each. The win places St Patrick's in second in the Lodge Pele valley league.
A Telegraph reporter spoke with six men on relief who said federal funds fail to keep families warm fed and fed. One man with six mouths to feed described a coal allotment of two dollars lasting over two weeks with delivery charges cutting the value. They cited a harsh cold snap and argued relief favors business men over workers. Continued on Page 2.
John Deere Day drew more than 500 farmers from near and far Monday for a demonstration and show of the 1935 type J tractors and machinery. L. T. Poole, manager, called attendance gratifying and predicted a spring surge in farm use. A film Partners and stereoptical views complemented the program while Willing Workers of the Christian church served a free lunch.
Weather this past week remained mild with daytime temperatures near typical spring days. No cold snap returns and forecasts show no severe cold wave. light snow occurred only in Omaha while local farmers doubt moisture benefits as wheat has died and cattle will need pasture feed before spring.
The Boy Scouts sponsor a father and son banquet to be held next Thursday at 6 30 PM in the Legion rooms of the auditorium. Dinner will be served by scout mothers under Mrs. R A Barlow with G F Liebendorfer as toastmaster. Rev J J Sheaff of the Methodist church is the principal speaker. The event is open to all community youths and men without sons may bring a youngster.
Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon from the Presbyterian church for Dr Frank A Barger a Sidney osteopath whose death occurred Monday night in Denver. The church was packed and the Masonic Lodge was in charge. The body was sent back to Denver for cremation. Dr Barger had recently undergone an operation and his death followed an infection in the site of an earlier accident. He had practiced in Sidney 18 years and was a charter member and former president of the Sidney Rotary club. His sons Richard Bobby and Franklin were with him at the bedside. the family also includes E L Uptegrove who accompanied them. Continued on Page 6, Column 1.
Postmaster General Farley or his first assistant likely will address the Nebraska postmasters at the Sidney convention June 17 and 18. About 400 postmasters expected. W. L. Larson urged program planning. If Farley cannot attend, his assistant will appear. The meeting follows Grand Island’s event, with potential senator involvement.
J S Case introduces a new Midwest Combine and Tractor Co as retail distributor for Case farm implements. J L Hand, manager, says the complete Case line will be shown February 13 with factory reps, talking pictures and lunch. Hand notes tractors plows planters cultivators and threshers with modern time saving devices. Whitmire to run wholesale plant serving wide territory.
Everett and Dr. P C Mockett face off in district court over an injunction preventing Everett from practicing within 50 miles of Kimball. The dispute centers on a four year old contract drafted by Roland V. Rodman. Both sides have kept principal pleas private as the crowded courtroom awaits the outcome.
Parents of all boys scouts in Sidney are invited to a Monday night meeting at 7 30 in the basement city auditorium. Scout leaders and district officials seek parent input to improve the program and renew ties with leaders guiding youths through the scouting period.
The Roosevelt birthday ball, sponsored by the American Legion, cleared more than $100 for local and national charities. Expenses totaled about $39 to $40 for music advertising and miscellaneous items. The balance will be split 70 percent to local charities and 30 percent to the Roosevelt fund for infantile paralysis research. The event featured a grand march led by Mr. and Mrs. CC Radcliffe, with many couples participating. Attendance was lower than hoped due to illness and fear of sickness. President Roosevelt wore a birthday rose and thanked the nation from the microphone.
Charles Hutchins of Boulder Colorado famed as the Colorado bird man spoke at the senior high school auditorium Tuesday afternoon. The talk focused on Nebraska birds with large colored pictures. Three pictures were presented to the high school. Superintendent Liebendorfer noted the short notice prevented public announcement, but students and a few outside guests attended.
John M. Kreader a pioneer of the west Dalton district received a 50 year Masonic membership badge at a Dalton lodge meeting attended by more than 150 Masons from Dalton Sidney Potter Lodge Pole Chappell and Bridgeport Talks by Marius Christensen Hermann Schroeder and County Attorney Perry followed his honor Kreader long active in Masonry came from Fremont to the west Dalton area and is well known among his friends and neighbors.
Sidney high school cagers face Oshkosh on the local court tonight in the first meeting with the visitors in some time. The Maroons seek to bounce back after three practice games to Sterling Business College reserves, gaining needed experience for the season. Bridgeport and Sidney meet next Monday in a conference game.
The American Legion auxiliary aids many families via rehabilitation efforts in the community. They prepared two layettes and distributed baby clothes to four families, plus children's and adult garments, blankets, and quilts. They funded five unfortunates, aided needy families with groceries, and donated to milk funds and Kings Daughters. Census work began in the first Nebraska district with eight enumerators in Cheyenne county after a school of instruction.
The Wenoco Oilers beat Sterling Business College 71 to 29 in an independent game, with Hammond McNish and Kepler standout in scoring as the Oilers regain momentum. They host the Globe Refiners of Kearney, a fast Nebraska independent squad, at the auditorium Sunday night featuring several ex-college stars.
Sheriff W W Schulz will depart soon for McNeil Island Washington to present extradition papers for Donald Carlton, awaiting trial for larceny and a jail break. Carlton, now a federal prisoner, will be transferred to Sidney. Governor Cochran issued extradition papers on February 8. Carlton escaped from jail on September 14, 1933, while awaiting trial for breaking into a boxcar. he is serving a federal term for the same offense.
The chamber of commerce membership drive is under way and business and professional men are urged to align with the organization. Membership fees are $5 per year for professionals and $10 for business men. The low scale aims to encourage affiliation and active community involvement with hopes for several free entertainments for residents of the trade territory.
The partial sun eclipse will be visible over most of North America next Sunday morning, about 70 percent. Dr Julia May Hawkes, director of the Biswell observatory at Doate college, warns to view only through darkened glasses and notes the peak occurs around 9 15 a m.
Frank Loebe and Frank Hansen, injured in an auto accident near Lodge Pole last Sunday afternoon, have been removed to their homes. Hansen went home Monday and Loebe yesterday morning. Loebe will return to the hospital in a few days to have a compound fracture of the jaw set. Both men are out of danger.
Mrs. Anna Rocker, a pioneer resident of the south Lodge Pole district, died at her home seven miles southeast of Lodge Pole Monday morning. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church in Lodge Pole Wednesday afternoon and the body was taken to Sidney for burial beside her husband, who died years ago.
Nebraska university alumni will meet here February 15 to hear a charter day address by Dr. G. W. Rosenlof. The meeting place will be announced soon. Rosenlof also will speak at Alliance and Scottsbluff during this state visit.
William Becker was fined one dollar and costs by County Judge Barlow for stealing about 200 pounds of coal from the Union Pacific railroad. Becker was arrested by railroad agents after Union Pacific warnings to stop coal theft on the right of way.
