State highway patrolmen warn motorists to keep vehicles in good condition with regular inspections of lights brakes and safety devices. Officials Sheriff Schulz Mayor Roche and Chief Sid Moore say violators will be cracked down on and drivers in accidents caused by deficient equipment face legal risk under the new law. Continued ov.
A tentative plan to build an electric distribution system was approved at Scotts Bluff by businessmen and irrigation interests if Western Public Service property transfers to new owners. The proposed system would compete with any setup by purchasers, and would avoid costly condemnation proceedings.
The old year fades out tonight as locals prepare to greet the new year at a New Years Eve carnival ball. Sponsored by the American Legion at the city auditorium, Rollo Sissell and his famous band provide the music and the legion dance committee promotes the biggest dance of the year. Noise makers and other festive items are provided by the sponsors.
Civic group members forecast 100 1938 chamber of commerce memberships by mid January. About half of contacted businesses have paid dues and received 1938 plates, while others pledged but will pay after January 1. Continued on page 6 column 2.
Bartow issued 148 marriage licenses from January 1 to Wednesday. The county planned to reach 150 for the year with two more expected. June was the peak month, while December slightly led June last year. For the first time under Clerk Barlow four couples with licenses did not marry, their licenses not returned to the judge. One pair seemed formed by a correspondence romance and failed to result in marriage. Three licenses were issued Tuesday to Cheyenne county residents.
North Platte man well known in Sidney is held on a 1000 dollar appearance bond for an assault at a North Platte dance hall last Saturday night on Lincoln County Attorney Diedrichs. Diedrichs filed charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm. Hastings denied the disturbance occurred due to his father's prosecution.
Auto license purchases at the county treasurer’s office include a questionnaire card for a statewide motor vehicle allocation survey. Coordinated by county treasurers with the Nebraska Department of Roads and Irrigation and the U S Bureau of Public Roads, the card seeks non identified data on motor vehicle revenues by county.
Western Nebraska DeMolays elected Bill Ullstrom of Scottsbluff master counselor and chose Scottsbluff for the next semi annual meeting likely in June. The gathering at the Masonic temple drew 75 visiting DeMolays and 25 from Sidney with Don Chaloupka of Bridgeport named district senior counselor and Carl Hutchison of Sidney junior counselor.
The Fox theatre adopts a new weekly picture policy starting the new year. Weekly blocks shift to four changes, moving to Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday and altering features including Bad Man of Brimstone and Stand In with Leslie Howard. Harker's oven ware giveaways will occur Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Business and Professional Women's club sent a $72 check to the tuberculosis Christmas seal drive headquarters. The funds represent Sidney sales receipts and pleased club members. The county schools drive adds to Cheyenne county's total, expected to exceed the average. Committee members praised public generosity toward the appeal for funds.
KLZ Chevrolet dealers in the Rocky Mountain area sponsor the RiceColorado Cotton Bowl game broadcast from Dallas on New Year’s Day. T. E. Kokjer, KLZ dealer and sponsor, says the program starts at 12 45 p m Mountain Standard Time over KLZ Denver. A large KLZ staff of technicians and announcers will handle the Dallas broadcast.
The past year brought flood war famine and pestilence yet also progress in many lines. It has been memorable for start of events that could steer the world toward disaster or lasting peace and happiness. Cheyenne county endured a discouraging year but remains confident of better days ahead.
Dr. George G. Webster 80 died suddenly at his daughter's home in Denver after a Sidney career of 45 years. Funeral services were held December 21. Survivors include three daughters and one son. Nebraska officials discussed a new county budget law expected to take effect next August, with informal budgeting advised before August to cover months without funds.
A late published 14 year old note about Mrs A E Tanner injuring her arm led a friend to rush with sympathy. The friend learned the article was misattributed to a past history column and the visit became a playful moment.

John Deere Plow employees donated 18 dollars and goods to two destitute farm families. The county contributed vegetables, easing shortages of clothing fuel and food. The effort began in the John Deere office and quickly drew support from those connected with the business.
Three candidates filed for state offices on Tuesday. Dr. T. W. Bass of Broken Bow seeks state treasurer, a post he formerly held, William Housand Price 33 of Omaha runs for state auditor, the position he now holds, and District Judge John W. Yeager of Omaha seeks chief justice of the Nebraska supreme court. The 1938 primaries will be held August 9.
John A. Garrelts a Weyerts community resident and former Lodge Pole resident died at home last Saturday. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from his home and then at Weyerts Lutheran church. The Telegraph could not learn further details of the death.
Nebraska civic groups and public officials plan extensive pump irrigation work in the Lodge Pole Valley during 1938. The drive centers on education and financing for farmers switching to irrigated farming as drought and heat stress last summer demonstrated its potential. The Cheyenne County garden near Sidney and the Lodge Pole Development Company near Sidney report promising 1937 results, with the garden aiding relief efforts and the company expecting a profitable first year.
H S Strom of Scottsbluff takes over the Sidney Penney store while H W Shively departs for Scottsbluff to replace him. Shively came from Lamar Colorado earlier this year and has been active in civic work. Strom will bring his wife and child to Sidney once housing is found. Shively plans to leave for Scottsbluff soon.
Kimball County and Sidney Farm Loan Associations announce their annual sessions for February. Sidney meets February 17 in the district court room, Kimball February 18 at 1 PM in the same venue. Officers will be elected and business transacted. A Federal Land Bank of Omaha representative will deliver an address.
The first dance of the year will be at the city auditorium Saturday night January 1 with Hank Barker and his orchestra providing music. Barker and his band sponsor the event believing locals will crave a Saturday night dance New Years night. The band will unveil its new sound system improving reception and audibility across the entire floor.
Postmaster Leroy Larson reports Sidney postal receipts for 1937 will surpass the 1929 peak by about a thousand dollars. He notes Christmas December figures slightly above 1936 and the full month above December 1929, despite crop failures and discouraging conditions. He expects higher yearly volume if conditions normalized and credits the community for an outstanding record. Exact totals to come in a few days.
The 1937 Red Cross drive yielded 302 members led by Sidney chairman Harry Wingerson. Each community retains half of its funds for local charity and assistance. the other half supports national Red Cross programs and aid efforts in the year.
Four western Nebraska counties Box Butte Cheyenne Deuel and Kimball expect to share more than a million dollars in 1937 soil conservation payments this winter about 90 per cent of their wheat land is in the program and the money is due in February. Committeemen say the payments will help farmers strained by crop failures and should tide them over until the 1938 harvest while the winter wheat outlook is the best since 1930.
A family friendly New Year’s Eve gala at the Fox Theatre tonight begins at 11 30. The feature Prescription for Romance stars Mischa Auer Wendie Barrie and Kent Taylor with selected short subjects and carnival atmosphere. Manager Lew Williams urges patrons to attend the midnight frolic and extend New Year wishes.
Regional Director Cal A Ward notes a new year review of farm security activities. He highlights establishment of the FSA under bankhead Jones to provide rehabilitation loans and buy farms for tenants, replacing older emergency agency approaches. The old resettlement administration is discontinued as part of the changes.
Harvey M. Johnson of Omaha was elected president of the Nebraska Bar association at the close of its 38th annual convention in Omaha. Other officers elected, all of whom will be officers of the integrated bar, include Frederick M. Deutsch of Norfolk Max G. Towle of Lincoln and Morton H. Kuhns of Omaha as vice presidents George H Turner of Lincoln as secretary Golden P Kratz of Sidney as executive committee member at large.
J L Hand long associated with the implement and machinery business in Sidney since 1926 moves to Lincoln to head the Case Company retail branch. He will operate both Lincoln and Sidney offices under Midwest Combine and Tractor Company, with E E Andrews managing Sidney. The Lincoln office is at 600 620 S Street. The Case company will keep Lincoln and Sidney wholesale branches and Hand plans to hire six salesmen in Lincoln.
