City Clerk Gordon Tobin reports Sidney's 1955 new construction at 2,552,707 dollars, second only to 1953's 3,233,320. Across nine years since 1950 total construction reached 15,386,024 dollars, with 108 new homes and 73 new garages, while commercial and public works totals rose.
The Telegraph announces its Annual First Baby of the Year Contest for 1956 with eighteen Sidney county merchants providing prizes. The winning baby must be born in Cheyenne County to county residents, with birth time stated by the attending physician. Last year's first baby was Monica Rodriguez of Ordville at 9:25 a.m. on New Year's Day. Participating merchants include Alvin Duis Studio, Sidney Creamery, Thompson's Food Store, Sidney National Bank, Lee Stores, Farmers Insurance Group, Sidney 66 Oil Company, Town House Cafe, Greenlees Inc, Janda & Tobin Drug, Princess Shoppe, Bib N Tucker, Lockwood's Jewelers, Army Surplus Store, McDonalds, Haworth Hardware, Western Drug Co, and The Sidney Telegraph.
Radio KSID Sidney lists a packed weekend lineup featuring the Orange Cotton Sugar and Rose Bowls with games in Montgomery San Francisco New Orleans and El Paso. Matchups include Oklahoma vs Maryland Cotton Texas A&M vs Mississippi Sugar Pittsburgh vs Georgia Tech Rose Mid State UCLA vs Wyoming and Texas Tech.
The Twelfth Night service under Sidney Lions Club will be at 6 45 p m January 6 at the Sidney Band Shell. Trees may be brought to the site. Lions members will stack them at 3 p m. A program features tree lighting, a Christmas story, prayers and carols.

Wayne Willard, 23, of Sidney, pleaded guilty to speeding and was found guilty of willful reckless driving after a Tuesday afternoon three-vehicle crash on west Illinois Street. Judge Glenn Greenlee imposed 50 dollars for reckless driving and 10 dollars for speeding, totaling 60 dollars plus costs.
Sidney cafe operator Barney Coyle died at Memorial Hospital at 12 30 a m after a heart attack earlier. He was 59 and had run a cafe on Highway 30 east of Sidney. Funeral 1 30 p m Tuesday at First Christian Church with Rev Ralph Bixel officiating. Burial Greenwood Cemetery. Born July 23 1896 in Laury City Missouri he lived in Tarkio and Sidney 29 years. Survived by wife Etna Hilda Smith son Ronald and daughter Colleen Gass, plus mother Frances Coyle Mielke and siblings Albert Amy Carlson Gladys Hamilton and Vivian Hall.
Cheyenne County Commissioner George Fleming of Sidney said the county was not lax in the two million gas tax case. The Lancaster County District Court ruled former State Treasurer Frank Heintze and his bonding firm not liable for refunds due to using the wrong census figures, denying Cheyenne about 50 000. Fleming noted county intervention and urged correct understanding of the decision.
Cheyenne County motorists may purchase new license plates and pay motor vehicle taxes in one visit at the county treasurer’s office starting Tuesday. Treasurer Herb Stevens says a flat $8 license fee applies to all cars, with truck rates by capacity and farm trucks exempted. Four clerks will assist to minimize wait times. vehicle owners must present old registration and tax receipts.

Cheyenne County secures a 12 year lease of fairgrounds from the State Board for 75 dollars after bidding rules. Located on school land west of Sidney, the deal avoids a anticipated condemnation suit and frees funds for next year's taxes. The board plans ground improvements and a large new building, with no other bidders.
A California motorist, RR Holloway 44 of Long Beach, was slightly injured when a deer darted in front of his car on Highway 30 east of Sidney at about 4 am. The 1955 model car rolled, hitting a telephone pole. damage estimated at 700 dollars.
Fire Chief Harvey Vizina reports a 50 percent drop in Sidney fire calls this year. City calls total 41 since January 1, down from 81 in 1954, while rural calls fall from 55 to 31. The most serious blazes touched the homes of Dan Duncan and G F Chambliss with no large commercial facility fires.
Windy Plains district of Wye-Braska Area Council reports 735 registered scouts as of November with growth since. District meeting notes camping plans at Laramie Peak June 10 30 and Little America July 8 21. Weekly camp fee 16 dollars plus 50 cents insurance. About 40 attendees from Kimball and Cheyenne Counties gathered at Cav Auditorium with supper by Lodyvepole scouters.
Logan County wheat prospects are strong per County Agent Vernon H. Carver. Planting occurred under better moisture than last year with good cover across the county, including northwest Logan where windstorms had stripped plants last spring. Moisture last fall and early winter has provided steady reserves for early growth.
The Nebraska State Safety Patrol will be on the road in full force for the New Year weekend. Col C J Sanders announced 122 patrol cars and 162 uniformed men with 34 new recruits aiding existing teams. Planes may assist in traffic observation Saturday and Sunday if weather allows, with rentals arranged in Omaha and North Platte. Gov Victor Anderson ruled out National Guard use for traffic duty this year. Nebraska recorded 313 traffic deaths to date, down from 328 last year, with three deaths over the Christmas weekend versus the prior year.
Ralph Tucker 45 of Tulsa Okla pleaded innocent to forgery on arraignment in Cheyenne County Court. Tucker was returned from Chicago where he was arrested on a $26 forged check. County Judge C W Smith bound him over to district court with bond set at 2000 dollars.
