City Clerk Gordon Tobin reports Sidney's 1955 new construction at 2,552,707 dollars, second only to 1953's 3,233,320. Across nine years since 1950 total construction reached 15,386,024 dollars, with 108 new homes and 73 new garages, while commercial and public works totals rose.

Merchants Offer New Year's Babe Record Prize List

The Telegraph announces its Annual First Baby of the Year Contest for 1956 with eighteen Sidney county merchants providing prizes. The winning baby must be born in Cheyenne County to county residents, with birth time stated by the attending physician. Driver Fined 60 in Sidney Three-Vehicle Crash

Wayne Willard, 23, of Sidney, pleaded guilty to speeding and was found guilty of willful reckless driving after a Tuesday afternoon three-vehicle crash on west Illinois Street. Judge Glenn Greenlee imposed 50 dollars for reckless driving and 10 dollars for speeding, totaling 60 dollars plus costs.

Barney Coyle Dies After Heart Attack at 59

Sidney cafe operator Barney Coyle died at Memorial Hospital at 12 30 a m after a heart attack earlier. He was 59 and had run a cafe on Highway 30 east of Sidney. Funeral 1 30 p m Tuesday at First Christian Church with Rev Ralph Bixel officiating. Burial Greenwood Cemetery. Born July 23 1896 in Laury City Missouri he lived in Tarkio and Sidney 29 years. Fleming Defends County After Gas Tax Case Ruling

Cheyenne County Commissioner George Fleming of Sidney said the county was not lax in the two million gas tax case. The Lancaster County District Court ruled former State Treasurer Frank Heintze and his bonding firm not liable for refunds due to using the wrong census figures, denying Cheyenne about 50 000. Fleming noted county intervention and urged correct understanding of the decision.

License Sale Starts Tuesday In Cheyenne County

Cheyenne County secures a 12 year lease of fairgrounds from the State Board for 75 dollars after bidding rules. Logan County wheat prospects are strong per County Agent Vernon H. Carver. Planting occurred under better moisture than last year with good cover across the county, including northwest Logan where windstorms had stripped plants last spring. Full Force Patrol Vigil Ready For Nebraska Highways

The Nebraska State Safety Patrol will be on the road in full force for the New Year weekend. Col C J Sanders announced 122 patrol cars and 162 uniformed men with 34 new recruits aiding existing teams. Planes may assist in traffic observation Saturday and Sunday if weather allows, with rentals arranged in Omaha and North Platte. Gov Victor Anderson ruled out National Guard use for traffic duty this year. Nebraska recorded 313 traffic deaths to date, down from 328 last year, with three deaths over the Christmas weekend versus the prior year.

Bahoman Held On Forgery Charge In County Court

Ralph Tucker 45 of Tulsa Okla pleaded innocent to forgery on arraignment in Cheyenne County Court. Tucker was returned from Chicago where he was arrested on a $26 forged check. County Judge C W Smith bound him over to district court with bond set at 2000 dollars.
