Nebraska counties showed wide variation in old age assistance grants in November with the state average at 16.37 dollars, up 90 cents from October and 1.42 higher than November 1937. Brown county posted the lowest 9.77 and Devel county the highest 23.91, while 45 counties exceeded the state figure. several counties surpassed the 18.50 alert level including Devel and Cheyenne.

Unemployed Relief Starts January 3rd
Thousands of Nebraska workers eligible under the Nebraska Unemployment Compensation law will file initial claims during the week of January 3 in twenty State Employment Service offices. Director R T Malone announced a 7 035 000 fund for benefit payments and said plans are in place to process valid claims promptly. To be eligible, workers must have earned wages for about eight weeks in 1938 under covered employers. Benefits checks will be issued starting early 1939.

Former Resident Of This County Is Dead
Mrs. John Scott Elliot, who homesteaded with her husband in Cheyenne county in 1887, died at her Sacred Heart Minnesota home recently. Old friends here learned of her passing, including C J Osborn who received the news. The Elliotts proved up on their 1893 homestead and remained in touch with the Osborns through the years after leaving the area.

Governor R L Cochran told the Associated Press in Lincoln this week he would press on by mail with Washington PWA officials to seek reconsideration of the agency's refusal to grant funds to the Panhandle Public Irrigation district and other Nebraska pump irrigation districts. He planned to meet Howard A Gray in Washington but Gray was ill. Gray had said pump irrigation districts were cooperatives and not eligible, but the PWA legal department later said districts organized under Senate File 310 in Nebraska were public agencies.

Certificates For Licenses Issued In County Office
At mid-afternoon Wednesday the county treasurer's office had issued 220 certificates for 1939 motor vehicle licenses. The demand for licenses has been slow through the holidays but the big rush is anticipated after the first of the year. The licenses went on sale last week.
Heavy Fine on Muskrat Trapper in Morrill County
David Longenecker of Bayard was fined ten dollars for each of 55 muskrat pelts found in his possession. The Morrill County court in Bridgeport assessed the fine after he pleaded guilty, per Bridgeport News-Blade.

Three Men Missing Since Dec 15 Found
Three Greeley Colp men reported missing after a coyote hunt began December 15 near Kimball were found Wednesday. Fred Herbst John Whetstone and Norman Finn said they stayed at a Kimball rooming house since Sunday and were bartering with a produce manager to sell coyote skins. Whetstone said they delayed writing relatives in Greeley as they planned to return home Wednesday or Thursday.

Postmaster Leroy Larson reports Christmas card buying revived in Sidney with 7200 more one cent stamps sold between December 8 and 23 than last year. Letters through the cancelling machine rose 7100 during December 17 to 24, while parcel post volume stayed near the 1937 rush. Total yearly volume is expected to be about two per cent lower, but this improves on earlier fears and shows a $100 uptick in Christ mas business mainly from stamp sales.

Roach Heads to Denver for Temporary Company Assignment
