Comparing Silage Values by Dry Matter Content
Lincoln based University of Nebraska Extension livestock specialist Paul Guyer explains that comparing silages on a dry matter basis accounts for moisture differences. Corn silage typically outperforms forage sorghum silage by about 10 percent, milo silage often exceeds many corn silages per ton of dry matter, and Sudan sorghum crosses are closer to hay in value, sometimes 19 to 25 percent lower than corn silage. Early harvested milo can rival corn silage, while Sudan sorghums may offer higher protein but lower total digestible nutrients, making them suited for wintering programs or as alfalfa substitutes when protein is high.
