Success In Two County Oil Ventures

Two new oil discoveries draw interest across Cheyenne Morrill Banner and Kimball counties. Fundamental Oil Co. reports 800 feet oil and 55 feet oil and gas cut mud from 4324-28 feet at No. 1 Schnell in Cheyenne. Falcon Seaboard tests at No. 1 Dvorak show pipe yet run. Heider field. Banner Oil Co. makes a Morrill county discovery amid cold-weather drilling. one development well in Banner also produces at No. 1 Harless in the Singleton field. a drill stem test returns 250 feet of oil and no water from about six feet of sand. Kimball County reports two dry wildcats.

Freed Prisoners Die in Wyoming Car Crash

Sheriff Schulz faced a grim morning after a Cheyenne County jail release story. James Edward Bennett, about 60, of Casper, and Willard R. Knapp, 52, of North Platte, had just been freed Tuesday for drunken driving and were killed when their vehicle left U S 87 near Chugwater, plummeting 1,200 feet down a bank.

Tallest Christmas Tree in Indiana Highlighted at Monument

In Indianapolis, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument hosts the nation's tallest Christmas tree. The 246 foot tree is festively adorned with electric candles and stars for the holiday season.

Sidney High School Regent Scholar Named

Bruce Blanchard, senior at Sidney High School, earned a one year Regents scholarship to the University of Nebraska tuition free after the Regents Scholarship Test with 44 SIDNEY seniors. Alternates named include Robert Jay Judith Johnson Dan McKay James Selzer and Diane Robin. Bruce is active in National Honor Society Masque and Gavel business manager Chorus and Madrigal. He leaves mid January for a Rotary Exchange Year in Argentina before enrolling at the university.

Panhandle Forecast: Cloudy Skies and Warming Trend Ahead

Panhandle region weather looks mostly cloudy with westerly winds at 20 to 30 mph this afternoon tonight and Thursday. Light snow possible Thursday with highs near 40 to 50 and nightly lows 25 to 40. Five day outlook shows temperatures averaging 10 to 15 degrees above normal with highs near 50 and little precipitation.

Gale Winds Stir Dust Through Area

A severe late autumn gale battered the Southern Panhandle with gusts up to 73 mph. Visibility dropped to a quarter mile as dust clouds reduced clarity, while temperatures swung from 25 to 57 on Monday and rose to the 60s later as winds eased by noon.

Farm officials push plan for Sioux Army Depot ag research center

A seven member Lincoln delegation urged the Nebraska Legislature to fund a High Plains Agricultural Research Center at Sioux Army Depot. They argued the Southern Panhandle needs a satellite station linked to Scottsbluff, with initial outlay of 145410 dollars and annual costs of 37500 dollars. The plan proposes transferring 2000 acres of Sioux land to the University of Nebraska, valued at over 600000 dollars, to boost local farmers facing steep income declines.
