Groups in Sidney and Gurley plan New Year's Eve dances and dinners. The Gurley American Legion Post 137 hosts a dance in the Legion Hall with dancing from 9 30 p m and noisemakers. Sidney Junior Chamber of Commerce hosts a public dance at the National Guard Armory 8 p m to 2 a m with Ellis Modern Western Swing Band. Proceeds from the Jaycee dance support the Little League fund. The Pastime Club features The Salvadores from 8 p m to 2 a m with noisemakers. The Sidney Elks Club hosts a party from 9 p m with hats favors and midnight ham and eggs. Fort Sidney Motor Hotel offers dancing, music, free favors, and dinner to 11 p m. Sidney Country Club plans a smorgasbord at 8 p m with dancing and New Year’s trimmings.

Yanney Renamed State Board Member for 1969 Term
E K Yanney and S H Shupe were renamed to full terms on the State Normal Board by Gov. Morrison. Shupe, a dentist from Wayne, will sue John T. Bressler of Wayne. Yanney, an officer with First State Bank of Lodgepole, has served since 1961 and is the only member appointed by Gov. Morrison. Terms run to January 1969.

Edward P. Palmer 61 of Fairmont Minnesota former Sioux Army Depot employee dies after a long illness at home. He was born March 3 1901 in St James Minnesota and married Mary Garry June 10 1941 in Guckeen Minnesota. Services set for 9 am Monday at St. John s Vianney Fairmont with burial in Fairmont Cemetery. Survivors include his wife three children two sisters and four brothers. Palmer had lived in Sidney from 1942 to 1961 while employed in Labor Equipment and Housing Divisions. He retired this year on sick leave. He was active with Knights of Columbus Chalice Club.

Orval Spelts Jr. Is Dead Funeral Will Be Monday
Milton Orval Spelts Jr. 45 died at his home Wednesday evening apparently of a heart attack. He was office manager at Panhandle Drug Co. and found Thursday morning by employees after not reporting for work. Burial plans set for Monday at 11:30 a.m. from Moore Mortuary Denver, with interment at Fort Logan National Cemetery. Spelts, born September 19, 1917 in Lincoln, Nebraska, served as a Major in the Army Engineers Corps overseas. He and wife Eleanor M. Boyd Spelts have four children and recently moved to Sidney from Gurley. He was a member of Weyerts Post 137 American Legion and Delta Upsilon. Survivors include wife Eleanor, four children Judith Lynn, Robert Boyd, Sharon Kay, Thomas Orval, his mother Mrs. Harold Mason, and sister Mrs. Louise Hall, both of Denver.

LODGEPOLE The sale of Duncans AG Grocery to Lyle Van Ness of Sidney was announced this week. The new owner will operate the store and take over on Feb. 1. Mr and Mrs Harry Duncan have run the grocery since August 1957 after purchasing it from Hap and Harry Lindley. They plan to stay in Lodgepole for several months but have not announced plans.

Two Men Held Over Stolen Car In Ogallala Chase
Sidney police highway patrol and sheriff offices joined a search for a stolen 1956 Chevrolet reported stolen between 7 15 and 8 15 p m from between The Telegraph and Fox Theatre. Vehicle owned by Jack Loveland of Sterling Colorado was seen in Ogallala by 9 p m. Two suspects Brockbank and Harmon were captured and await return to Sidney. James H McNeill fled, aged 24. Father Of Resident Dies December 22
John Cornett age 88 of Moulton Iowa died Saturday December 22 in a Moulton rest home after a year of ill health. His daughter Mrs Duane Martin of Sidney and her son Don traveled to Moulton for funeral services and arrangements. Surviving are three daughters and four sons along with other relatives. Mrs Martin and Don also visited her sister and brother in law Charles and Mrs Beard in Moulton and planned to return this weekend.

War I Vets Auxiliary To Meet Next Thursday

Fleming backs Sidney trade school bid in Nebraska
Senator Fleming released a statement after Grand Island pledges a trade school spurred his plan to introduce a bill at the next session. He proposes a vocational technical school at Sidney on a 40 acre site near US 385 with nearby facilities and housing, similar to Milford. Traffic deaths totaled at least 626 during the 102 hours ending at midnight Christmas, with 813 deaths from all accidents and 105 fire deaths. The National Safety Council had projected 650 to 750 traffic fatalities, and weather and heavy travel contributed to the higher rate in the final 24 hours.
