Dalton Man Nickell dies after long Cheyenne County life

Charles Lee Nickell 85 of Dalton and Bridgeport died Monday in Bethel Nursing Home Bridgeport after nearly six decades in Cheyenne County He was born January 20 1882 in Holt County Missouri and married Annie Jensen in 1905 He moved to Nebraska in 1909 and farmed before entering trucking in Dalton The funeral will be Thursday at 2 PM at Dalton Presbyterian Church with burial in Dalton Cemetery Pallbearers are Gene Sanders Gus Kragel Alex Flohr John Heizer Lyle Rabe and C. J. Carley The Holewick Funeral Home Bridgeport is in charge Memorials may be given to Dalton Presbyterian Church Surviving are four sons Ernest Alvin Homer Charles Jr two daughters five grandchildren and five great grandchildren He was preceded in death by two sons and several siblings

Mrs Greenlee Services To Be Thursday

Mrs. Glenn L. Greenlee 82 dies in a Denver hospital after a month’s hospitalization and months of ill health. Services Thursday morning at Gehrig & Son Funeral Home with A D Tennant of the Church of Christ officiating. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Born Ethel Ida Earhart December 3 1885 in Mason City Illinois she moved to Sidney Nebraska in 1928. Survived by husband Glenn L. Greenlee two sons Ray Plainview Neb and Mervil L Gering four grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Panhandle Forecast Preview

The forecast calls for fair conditions this afternoon and night with increasing cloudiness Thursday. Light snow is possible with a low tonight of five to 15 degrees and a Thursday high near 30. Snow chances are under five percent this afternoon and tonight, rising to about 40 percent Thursday. Temperatures Thursday through Monday run 3 to 13 degrees below normal with highs 25 to 35 and lows five to 15, and frequent snow periods anticipated through Monday.

Four Injured In Nebraska Car Wrecks

The Nebraska State Patrol reports two back to back crashes near Sidney over two days. Allen McGee of Sidney lost control and a collision with a second vehicle caused a total loss of his 1959 car with tooth injuries to McGee. The second crash near 1:30 am involved Gary Heckman of Westminster Colorado driving a 1951 car into Sidney Implement Lot hitting a parked tractor. Heckman and two passengers Elmer Holliday and Johnny Schepker, both of Sidney, were injured. Holliday released. Heckman and Schepker held overnight.

Suspected Car Thief Released

A California man jailed December 12 on auto theft suspicions and charged with feloniously concealing a stolen automobile was released Thursday. FBI checks traced the actual suspect to Toledo, Ohio, though Ellis was driving the car when apprehended after three men at a filling station prompted a police call. The stolen vehicle, reported earlier this year in another state, broke down near town as Ellis sought repair parts.

Sidney Federal Pays $160,200 In Dividends

Sidney Federal Savings and Loan Association announced a dividend of $160,200 to savings customers for the past year. Manager Jim Payne reported the payment is a little over a 10 percent increase from last year and reflected solid savings and financing results.

Snow Storm Leaves Little Moisture As Colder Weather Approaches

A weekend snow storm brought minimal moisture with a forecast of dropping temperatures next weekend. Record low readings occurred in Sidney and Lodgepole with single digit lows, while Dalton reported minus five. Snow totals were light, with traces and up to 0.19 inches locally, and moisture in Potter’s snow estimated at 0.04 inches.

Inductee Lindon A. Sanders Leads December Call

Lindon Allen Sanders of Potter was the sole December inductee per Cheyenne County selective service clerk Mrs. Louis Johnson. He is in basic training at Fort Bliss Texas. One man was sent for physical elimination and Johnson notes ten will go for physicals and five for induction in January.

Farmers Tax Guide Ready for 1968 Tax Season

Cheyenne County Extension office received the 1968 Farmer's Tax Guide. Publication 225 from the Internal Revenue Service explains income and self employment taxes and aids in filing federal returns. Available at the Extension office in the Post Office building.

Wheat Grower Urges Passage of Farm Bill

Phil Curtiss of Sidney, president of the Cheyenne County Wheat Growers Association, urged farmers to convey their views on the Monroney Purcell Farm Bill before a Senate Agriculture and Forestry hearing in January. He emphasized price support loans and reserve stock use to maintain producer control and noted the bill’s impact on reserve levels and the Commodity Credit Corporation.

Slick City Streets Blamed In Several Weekend Mishaps

Seven traffic accidents were investigated by Sidney Police over the Christmas weekend as slick streets contributed to crashes. No injuries were reported though damage varied from $10 to $335.

Elmer Haines Transfers to Calgary Canada

Friends report Elmer Haines moves to Calgary Canada to manage a new Fox Theatre there. He has worked with Fox in Los Angeles after leaving Sidney and will open the Calgary theatre soon. Mrs Haines and daughter Priscilla will join him after selling their Los Angeles home.
