The Panhandle expects little snow through Christmas with a five day outlook showing mainly above normal temperatures. Today will be fair and warmer tonight and Saturday with westerly winds 15 to 25 mph. Lows 10 to 20 degrees, highs around the 40s, snow chances under five percent.
A professional school administrators negotiations workshop is set for Saturday in Sidney. Dr. George Bailey will lead, with tapes from a Lincoln meeting where over 300 Nebraska administrators attended. Sessions run 8:30 to 4:00 in the Senior High School cafeteria including topics on negotiation structure and common pitfalls.
The district announces all schools will open on January 3 after the Christmas break. An error in the previous issue listed another date. Dismissal on December 22 is at 2 p.m. St. Pat’s vacation ended yesterday with school resuming January 3.
In December the Cheyenne County Welfare Board continued aid for nine aid to dependent children cases and approved two new applications. November expenditures reached 35511.30 with 15954.00 paid to individuals and 19557.30 to vendors. Totals include 202 recipients for aid to dependent children and 113 Old Age Assistance cases.
James R. Paxton of Sidney earns certification from the Nebraska State Department of Education to teach basic firemanship. The training starts January 10 in Potter, with ten other Nebraska instructors. six weeks of weekly sessions follow under Chief State Fire Instructor William A. Berens.
The nominating committee has selected ten names for eleven board members as five directors will be replaced next year. Members will vote for the new directors and the board will elect a president and vice president after the first of the year.
Sidney Police warn youngsters to stay off city streets due to traffic hazard while nominating a safe sledding area at the north end of Elm. Chief Roy Bauer notes the hill is off the road for safe use and reports Legion Park pond well frozen with many skaters enjoying the ice.
An unofficial low of seven below zero was recorded at the Sidney Flight Service station, possibly the coldest yet this season, as winter arrived with a foggy, chilly start. Snow measured about one inch with six hundredths of an inch moisture. flights by Frontier Airlines faced landings delays. Weather expected to turn warmer over weekend but next Wednesday may bring colder temperatures, with widespread ice on roads and prospects of wetter, colder 30 day outlook across western states.
Telegraph subscribers are advised no paper will be printed on Monday December 25 and Monday January 1 as holidays. The office closes December 23 and resumes regular publication on Wednesdays and Fridays, with news and ads directed to the Tuesday after each holiday accepted. staff extend season greetings.
Sidney businessman Keith Earl Kaylor 41 died Thursday in Memorial Hospital after a week as a patient. Services are Saturday at 2 PM at the Methodist Church with burial after military rites at Greenwood Cemetery. He was born March 10 1926 at Wood River Nebraska and served in World War II. survived by his wife six Sidney children and parents.
An informal survey today reports the flu rate steady in Sydney area schools. Junior high absenteeism was 115, senior high 110, North Ward 40, Central 32, South 53, with rural schools largely unaffected as Christmas activities proceed.
Nebraska Department of Labor data show 598 openings in November statewide with 4 726 total placements across all jobs a year over year decline from 5 399. Sidney district filled ten nonagricultural positions as unemployment claims rose locally while statewide initial and continued claims fell.
