The first three days of Christmas week brought brisk buying in Sidney stores easing December gloom. Mon through Wed were like Saturdays with strong volume and last minute shoppers found good stocks. Stores cleared heavy gift stock, demand pointed to practical, low priced items, aiding overall December results though not reaching 1935 levels.
Father Munich once led the Catholic church in Sidney about 30 years ago and is dying in St. Joseph's hospital, Denver, from a heart ailment. He has been in a coma after failing to rally, and old residents recall his tenure as part of Sidney’s church history. The last Sidney visit was during Rev. Anton Link's silver anniversary celebration.
Mr and Mrs Peter Helfrich of Sidney completed five weeks of west coast touring and returned home Tuesday evening They said the trip was most enjoyable and the real reward was catching up on hometown news in Telegraph and Telegraph News after their return
E A Winter of Sidney, a druggist, will join his parents in Superior for a combined golden wedding anniversary and Christmas reunion. The elder Winter couple observed their golden anniversary yesterday and the holiday gathering will extend the celebration to relatives.
Winter wheat production in 1937 was placed at slightly over 600 million bushels by the department of agriculture. Fall sown acreage estimated at 57,187,000 acres is the largest on record, surpassing the 51,391,000 acres sown in 1918. Last year’s sowing of 49,688,000 acres yielded 519,013,000 bushels. The 1928-32 average was 622,252,000 bushels. Abandonment of 1935 seedings reached 243 percent of acreage, vs 29.0 percent in 1934 and 12.6 percent the 1922-31 average. Dec 1 crop condition stood at 75.8 percent of normal, vs 78.2 last year and 82.4 ten-year Dec 1 average. Rge acreage reported 7,673,000, up from 6,547,000, with crop condition at 71.0 percent of normal. Last year’s crop was 25,554,000 bushels. 1928-32 average was 38,212,000. State Treasurer Hall dies seventeen days before term end, closing the treasury for business. Deputy H. J. Murray remains on duty under a $50,000 bond with a pledge of appointment by Gov. Cochran, contingent on obtaining a $1 million surety bond. Abrahamson, Omaha insurance agent, works to secure bonding companies and deliver the bond.
State taxes chief Smith released November figures showing total expenditures of 3,050,625 down from 3,809,828 in October. Major cut stems from highway maintenance at 1,659,198 versus 2,397,570. Salary costs rose slightly to 398,738 from 388,430, while supplies grew to 727,225 from 708,141.
The unicameral legislature weighs a pre-organization caucus as 43 members begin shaping the session. Democrats and Republicans recall old party caucuses as they discuss who will fill key posts such as speaker, pro tem, clerk, and other offices on the eve of January 7.
Definite limitations on livestock feed loans from the Resettlement Administration will be announced today in field instructions to county supervisors by Cal A. Ward regional director. Loans: not more than 12 animal units per borrower, defined by the RA supervisor, for subsistence stock only. No loan to those indebted to a production credit association or regional agricultural credit corporation unless emergency needs arise. continued on page 28 column 2.
The 1936 37 Sidney High School Maroons basketball schedule is finalized with a 26 game slate. Openers begin January 5 against Potter on Sidney court, then Kimball January 8 and Alliance January 15. The team travels to Sterling January 19 and Scottsbluff January 22, hosts Lodge Pole January 6, and visits Bridgeport January 29. Home games loom Scottsbluff February 5 Oshkosh February 9, Kimball February 12, Chappell February 16, Alliance February 19, and Chappell February 12, ending with Bridgeport at home. The second team plays December 29 through February 27 with key dates against Potter Kimball Sterling Lodge Pole Bridgeport St Patrick's Gurley Chapell.
Sidney merchants and business houses extend Christmas greetings through multiple advertisements in this issue. The old Sidney Telegraph tradition invites the public to share in the goodwill. Those without copy can still publish New Year greetings next week.
Family gatherings and dinners will be the rule in Sidney on Christmas Day. Eleven associates at the local J. C. Penney store share in a special Christmas bonus from the company for a successful year. Over 25,000 Penney associates nationwide receive extra pay. regular employees with over a year get two weeks additional pay, shorter-tenured staff receive a pro rata amount. Company president E C Lamb calls 1936 the most successful year and notes the bonus honors loyalty and service.
The American Legion and its auxiliary rent the city auditorium for two holiday dances this year. The auxiliary hosts the annual Christmas dance Friday night with Hink Barker and his orchestra providing the music. The Legion sponsors a carnival dance on New Year’s Eve.
Christmas mail volume sets records as rural routes coped with a flood of letters and packages. Post office staff report heaviest Monday mail since Sunday arrivals, with trains delayed by loading and unloading Christmas mail. Continued on page 6.
Sidney gasoline dealers operate as individuals under a Nebraska plan effective December 15. Major companies withdraw support, leaving about 6 000 dealers to manage credit risks with approved customers while creditCard systems target key clients. Kennedy jailed in Portland ending Bridgeport jail break. other escapees, Calvert and Fields, captured in Texas and jailed.
Campbell files suit in district court at Gering against North Central Gas for 7600 in damages from the November 9 explosion. He seeks 2500 lost business, 1600 profits over two months, 500 property damage, 1000 salaries paid to Campbell and a coworker, plus 1000 legal fees. Lawrence Clyde, a cook injured, seeks damages. petition faults gas mains for defect and gas escape, igniting and destroying premises and contents.
A Chappell fire crew of twenty faced a dead fire truck battery during a Lincoln highway blaze call. While firefighters pushed the truck toward the scene, a California tourist yelled Get a horse, humiliating the crew and delaying response.
Motor vehicle accidents in Nebraska for November totaled 307 with property damage only 264 injuries 264 and 20 crashes with fatalities 23 fatalities. For the week ending December 5 the counts were property damage only six injuries 53 fatal accidents six and seven fatalities.
Charles Glaubitz pleaded guilty to keeping rooms for gambling purposes before County Judge Robert A. Barlow Tuesday, fined $100 and costs, which he paid. Glaubitz, arrested with ten others at his 12th and Linden home during a raid last Saturday, faced hearings for the others, who were fined $1 and costs. Authorities expect further sensational criminal actions on county dockets soon.
The Rotarians and Lions held a joint meeting yesterday at noon. Rev. Anton Link of the Catholic church gave a Christmas address. A S Hardy, Rotary president, spoke briefly, and A L Miller, former Lions district governor, also spoke. Lions invite Rotarians to join two Wednesday noon meetings due to Christmas and New Year holidays.
The 17th annual meeting of Sidney stock holders of the country club will be held at the clubhouse January 13. Notices by President Leon Fine say prospective members may attend. Stockholders must elect a new president, vice president, secretary treasurer, three directors for three years, fill the one year term of the late L T Poole, and the two year term of Dr L A Donahoe who moved to Omaha.
The Coliseum schedules a Christmas day matinee for children on Friday afternoon and a Christmas night skating party for the public Friday night. A New Year’s Eve party is also featured in coming weeks. Reservations are now being taken for the gala event to skate out the old year and welcome the new. Treats and favors will be provided by management.
Claude Golding, longtime Alliance WPA administrative staff member, will remain in the Alliance office under a new arrangement announced last week. He was en route to Norfolk for a transfer when orders redirected him to Alliance for reassignment to other work.
Plans for the annual College of Agriculture meetings move along as more societies finalize programs. Speakers for Tuesday and Thursday sessions are being secured. Billy Quick's University of Nebraska band, 80 pieces, will perform in full dress during the Thursday general session. A small grain utility show is planned all week with alfalfa, sorghums, oats, barley, and wheat on display, no open corn show. Tentative plans for the farm equipment association meeting include pump irrigation as a key topic of discussion across Nebraska.
