Sidney residents are told of forthcoming changes as Northwestern Bell and AT&T expand service. A new long distance system, direct distance dialing, will allow dialing other cities with prefixes and five digit numbers. Crossing Deaths Shock Scottsbluff as Train Hits Car
A Burlington passenger train struck a car at a county road crossing near the Scottsbluff sugar factory at 10 15 am, killing 19 year old Charles William Red Shirt and his five year old niece Evangeline Poor Bear, both residents of 800 Eleventh Street. The car wedged on the locomotive, forcing the train to travel over 500 yards before stopping.

1958 Plate License Procedure Adopted in Cheyenne County
Cheyenne County Treasurer Jack Inhelder announces a new system for purchasing 1958 Nebraska auto plates and paying car taxes. Tax notices will not be mailed. they can be requested after January 2 and picked up at the courthouse window. The license office opens 9 am to 4 pm, tax receipts issued with plates, bring old registration, two service lines and a February 15 deadline to hold current numbers. Afterwards plates are issued on a first come, first served basis.

Rowse Hearing Continued as Counsel Appointed
William A. Rowse, a 37 year old Harrisburg man accused of murdering Dean Dove of Potter, appeared in Harrisburg district court without a lawyer and asked for counsel. Judge John H. Kuns appointed S. E. Torgenson of Kimball as attorney. The hearing was continued for Rowse to confer with counsel. he pleaded innocent and remains jailed in Scotts Bluff County without bail.
