Mrs. Alice L. Joyce Helfrich, 75, died Saturday after a lengthy illness. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. at St Patrick's Church in Sidney with Rev Father Albert Albel officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Survivors include her widower Peter and six children.
Last rites were held Monday for Carrie D Keating 76 who died Friday after a nine month illness. She lived six months with her son J E Keating in Sidney. Rites at St Patrick Church were led by Fr Albert Albel. Burial will be in Riverton Wyoming. Surviving are her son J E Keating of Sidney a granddaughter Karl Kay and brothers Frank Derieg Randolph Nebraska and George Derieg Detroit Michigan.
The Department of Agriculture foresees a improved western Nebraska wheat outlook with total 1953 yield possibly under 900 million bushels nationwide. Nebraska winter crop expected at 53.1 million bushels with heavy fall drought impact and snow cover since December. Kansas, Missouri, and Colorado yields listed. 1953 spring crop undetermined.
Cheyenne County output rose past eight thousand barrels per day with Ohio Oil Company averaging over 7500 bpd and the Dorman lease near Sidney producing about 1000 bpd. The rise will boost royalty checks next month while exploration remains lull after holidays.
Wet snow and ice caused a string of accidents across the region Sunday with no serious injuries. One major collision in Lodgepole damaged buildings and a bank, while a chain of crashes west of Sidney involved five vehicles on Highway 1911. A Chrysler near Portland, Ore., suffered about $1,500 in damage as fog reduced visibility.

Holiday sales peaked as Sidney merchants report a record-breaking season with strong late shopping days. Grocery stores and markets expect brisk business, while shelves may be picked over by Wednesday night. Despite higher costs, retailers note steady traffic and optimism for the new year.
JoAnn R. Alexander of the Sioux Ordnance Depot was among 41 army ordnance purchasers awarded certificates at 3 p.m. Friday, December 19, after completing a three week contract pricing course at the University of Toledo. Nine ordnance inspectors with a twelve week explosives chemical testing course will also receive certificates. Professor Philip H. Hensel, course coordinator, will present the candidates in the Student Union.
Three year old Ronald Ayala, son of Mr and Mrs Elodie Ayala, who was badly hurt when he fell from a moving car last Thursday, is reported to be getting along well at a local hospital.
John Olson a Nebraska farmer praises The Ohio Oil Co for two successful oil wells on his Kugler pool farm. A nephew in Omaha mocks him with a dummy story about wealth, but Olson laughs at the tale noting the wells bring security and a constant flow of money.
The annual Kings Daughters campaign in Sidney reports a total of 783.83 dollars on Monday afternoon. The funds support Merry Christmas baskets and year round charity work including dental and medical assistance and clothing for underprivileged families. Donors include Sidney National Bank and multiple individuals and groups.
Funeral services for Nettie Ann Westrope 80 will be held at 1 30 PM Tuesday at Gehrig Funeral Home. She died December 17 in an Omaha hospital from heart ailment. The Rev McPherson of Peetz will officiate. Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery. Survivors include her son Ted and several nieces and nephews including Mrs Lela Williams of Peetz.
Ira Steward reports progress on Sidney Community Hospital campaign as the state hospital advisory board forwards tentative plans to the U S Public Health Service in Kansas City with a request for initial recommendations by January 15. A Sidney meeting to review plans is set for January 15, with a federal representative invited to attend.
Friday December 26 is a federal holiday for postal workers, so no rural delivery. Sidney post office remains open and city carriers will complete their routes.
A heavy weekend snow blanket hit western Nebraska with 3 to 6 inch depths across eleven counties. The Nebraska Highway Patrol warned drivers to use caution on packed ice and snow as main roads stayed open but slippery. Snowdrifts and zero visibility stalled traffic on several routes, though No. 30 emerged as the best east–west highway for the holidays.
About 80 John Deere servicemen from Western Nebraska Wyoming and South Dakota attended a five day service school in Sidney. Ira Steward led the sessions with instructors from the Omaha regional office teaching classes on tractors combines and hay balers.
