Dalton farm couple fixes toys for Toys for Toys program

Howard and Phyllis Gerke of eight miles southwest of Dalton lead a community effort to repair repaint and recondition toys for needy children in the southern Panhandle through the Toys for Toys program funded by the Community Action Agency in Sidney. They gather gifts from neighbors hunt parts salvage items from junk piles and sometimes enlist Santa Claus helpers to identify youths in need. The couple pigments and sews while Gerke repairs and they admit some modern toys baffle them yet their lifelong toy passion keeps them at work. They note strong local cooperation including juck men who rescue discarded toys and help prevent waste while they prepare toys for distribution before Christmas.

Rexroth Heads ASC Committee in Cheyenne County

Robert Rexroth of Sidney has been re elected to the Cheyenne County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee and named county chairman. Dolan Larson of Gurley is vice chairman, with Elwood Lostroh of Sidney as holdover. Arnold Draper of Gurley and Bill Behrends of Sunol were elected as alternates. Deadline terms cover three years.

Carter names woman to Cabinet post

Plains Georgia UPI Jimmy Carter named Juanita Kreps to commerce secretary and Griffin Bell to attorney general along with Robert Bergland as agriculture secretary. Kreps first woman in a Cabinet post, Bergland a Minnesota farmer congressman, Bell facing NAACP opposition over civil rights record.

Johnson quits probation post for Sidney Police Department

District 10 Probation Officer Darrell Johnson will leave his Cheyenne County post on January 1 to become a Sidney Police Department patrolman. Johnson served six years as a deputy sheriff before taking the probation officer job last June and earned his permanent law enforcement officer certificate in April.

Toys For Toys Program warms Cheyenne areas this Christmas

Community Action Agency in Sidney reports the Toys for Toys drive will bring merrier holidays to about 100 families and 350 children in Cheyenne, Kimball and Deuel Counties. Since starting four years ago, the program collects repairs and distributes gifts sourced from welfare offices, neighbors, and agency clients.

Chappell gas station hit twice in two weekends

In Chappell at the corner of Highway 30 and Thompson Avenue the Hansen gas station suffered a fresh hit when a 1973 station wagon driven by Lyneil Rahe, 16, struck the front of the building. Rahe had a lip cut and teeth knocked out and was hospitalized in Sidney. A week earlier Norman Rennich, 24, of Oshkosh wrecked the sign and utility pole, was cited for drunken driving, and the station owner, Larry Hansen, reviews the damage and considers next steps.

WIFE group meets Tuesday in Sidney

The Women Involved in Farm Economics group formed last week in Sidney plans its second meeting Tuesday at 9 am at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel. Moderator Mrs Marilyn Spiker says a nominating committee and a bylaws committee will likely be appointed. Attendees include women from the Alliance area who reportedly plan to attend.

Extradition Action Underway in Sidney Murder Case

Extradition efforts to bring Jerry Simpson and Jacqueline Simpson Brick to Cheyenne County for trial on first degree murder and robbery proceed. They are jailed in Los Angeles and will appear there January 7. The victim, Frederick Skiba, was found shot four times along Interstate 80 west of Sidney after being killed on November 12.

Mailbox filled with Alaska cards from Perry Mason to Dean Bedient

Dean Bedient, a Sidney high school student with muscular dystrophy, receives daily Christmas cards from Alaska via his friend Perry Mason and Perry’s network. The cards come from Alaska residents, school staff, and even the Anchorage Daily Times staff, totaling 67 cards with 53 from Alaska. Dean hopes to visit Alaska someday, while his mother notes more Sidney and Nebraska cards are arriving, and his family encourages others to send cards to brighten his Christmas.
