Senator Miller Plans South American Tour and Tax Talks

Senator A L Miller and wife will leave early next year for a tour through the Rio Grande valley Texas Mexico City and Trinidad on a tramp steamer. The trip will include extensive travel in South America returning in late April. Miller notes he spent months talking to civic groups and studying state affairs writing articles on Nebraska facts including a state tax burden with farmers bearing about 64 percent. He discusses homestead exemption potential and tax ideas such as income and sales taxes plus the impact on schools and municipalities. He questions substitute taxes and how funds are distributed, urging careful study before any change.

Scotts Bluff National Monument Highlighted At Summit

At the summit 80 parking spaces were provided as federal highway work continued with CCC enrollees handling bank slopes and landscaping. Officials noted Scotts Bluff’s historic and scenic value as a national monument. Local erosion along the bad lands exposed fossil remains of mammoth turtles, three toed horses, and miocene camels. Astorians led by Robert Stuart first camped nearby in 1812, with the landmark named for trapper Horace Scott, who fell ill en route to St. Louis in 1828 while returning with pelts.
