A public hearing will be held Wednesday at three in the city clerk's office to decide if rent controls in Cheyenne County should end or continue. Lowell M. Davis chairs the advisory board and will present testimony and data to Housing Expeditor Frank R. Creedon in Washington.
With one week to go in the annual Christmas Seal Sale, the Nebraska Tuberculosis Association reports only 42 percent of its $150,000 goal raised so far. Chairman and local group leaders, including Kathryn Nelson and E T Robinson, oversee county and town drives as the drive urges a 100 percent response to fund the tuberculosis control program for 1948.
The final phase of the Nebraska Wheat Show will be the State Milling and Baking contest at Lincoln after the Sidney event. Winners from Sidney will contribute wheat for tests, judged on flour yield and bread texture, with a Chadron Milling trophy awarded to the top grower. Henry T. Rohde of Cheyenne County, 48, longtime Gurley resident and baseball enthusiast, died near Gurley after illness. funeral in Gurley with burial in Sidney.
Judge Robert A. Barlow filed to run for a fifth term as county judge and will face election next fall. The only other county official with a term ending then is County Commissioner Cecil Hunt from the east district, who has not yet filed and has until February to submit petitions.
Ralph H. Chappell began duties this week as manager of the O. P. Skaggs store in Sid. He had previously led the Skaggs store in Potter for 18 months. His family will remain in Potter until living arrangements are found in Sid.
The first Sidney war dead returned from overseas Lt Leroy Price was honored Sunday at the Methodist Church with Rev Howard Osborne officiating. Pallbearers were Eugene Reker Joseph Hahler Donald Shipman Arthur Zike Leonard Fine and Harold Hepner. Interment followed at Sidney Greenwood Cemetery with Gehrig Funeral Home in charge after a military escort met the body at the train.
Edwin Hassenplug, with a warrant issued November 1, was found at Westmore land Kansas and taken into custody by the Pottawattamie County Sheriff for Cheyenne county authorities. He faces nonpayment charges tied to a 1946 divorce decree and was arraigned after transfer by Sheriff W. W. Schulz who also collected a second prisoner in Lincoln.
Dr W S Petty state health director and R M Babcock engineer for the state health department will arrive in Sidney Wednesday for a survey of the hospital situation. Dr B Bentley member of the state hospital advisory board learned of the visit Monday. The advisory board report says Sidney needs at least thirty five more hospital beds and recommends the community as a rural hospital and clinic center.
Kimball and Banner county residents backing the Lovercheck No 1 oil test west of Harrisburg plan to secure drilling leases from nearby farmers. S. E. Torgeson said the group will finish drilling only if new lease and royalty agreements fund continued work. Powers Drilling Co of Casper deserted the well after breaking drill stems. one 690 foot stem remains. The well reaches about 6780 feet, with vibra tions reported as the cause of stem breaks. Tests suggest possible oil in the Sundance formation.
The body of 60 year old sheepherder Julian L. Sanchez was found in a sleep ing bag inside a granary on a Colton area ranch four miles south and three quarters of a mile west. He apparently died in his sleep from a heart attack before being discovered by his employer Jim Bledsoe of Lubbock Texas. County officials and the deputy sheriff investigated. Sanchez lived at 1028 E Abriendo Street Pueblo Colorado and his son John was notified. The remains are at Gehrig Funeral Home.
County Judge Robert A. Barlow presided over hearings this weekend on cases from Highway Patrolmen Urban Gay and Mel Busekist. Harvey Miles pleaded guilty to speeding, fined $10 and costs. Fred Rohla admitted to driving while intoxicated, fined $50 plus $7 costs and 60 day license suspension. Elizabeth Moon pleaded guilty to driving without a license, fined $1 and costs. Arlington Willis, Paul Garcia awaiting decisions on expired license charges. Alfred Mathews held for no license.

Dwight Beck Jr of A T and T in Sidney was elected president of the Greater Cheyenne County Safety Council at a Friday night organization meeting in the City Auditorium Legion room. Harold Keith and Cecil G Vines were named vice presidents, Tom Connors recording secretary, Mrs Keith Simpson secretary, and Mrs Rex Olsen treasurer. The officers will form the board of directors with committee heads Albert Nimtz Education Robert Wait Engineering Jack Weimer Enforcement John Dissmore Laws and Ordinances Frances Lathrop Publicity.
The Cheyenne County Rural Youth annual Christmas party takes place tonight at the City Auditorium Legion rooms. Planned entertainment includes relays square dancing and musical games with a 25 cent gift exchange. Entertainment committee members are Verlin Livingston Russell Gilson Evelyn Cartwright and Ethel Klente.
Cheyenne County residents invested 60940.75 in E F and G Series U S Savings Bonds during November, reported by H G Spearow, county chairman. Nebraska overall bought over eight million dollars in November, with E bonds 5193258 and F and G 2861782. Hall notes Nebraskans have purchased nearly forty million more in 1947 than 1946 first eleven months. He urges adding Savings Bonds to Christmas lists and paying year end bonuses as Bonds to curb inflation. Nationally about 31 billion in E bonds remain with original purchasers.
The state aeronautics commission notified Sidney's airport board that an engineer will arrive today to begin staking runways as part of long range plans by state and federal agencies. REA contact will determine rural electric line locations near the field, influencing runway routing. Substantial development of Sidney field is expected through 1948.
Two crashes west of Sidney on Highway 30 left three vehicles heavily damaged. Lawrence Van Duren, 25, of Sidney, pleaded guilty to failure to yield the roadway after side swiping W. J. Simpson, who had three hitch hikers with him. Van Duren was fined 25 dollars and Deputy Braasch investigated.
Harold K. Bond was installed High Priest of Tyrian Chapter No. 29 Royal Arch Masons on December 11. Installing officer was Past High Priest Leslie Neubauer with Kenneth Agnew assisting. New officers include John Seger King LeRoy Gish Treasurer M. D. Armstrong Secretary John Weimer Captain of the Host Ben Vacik Principal Sojourner Don Jorgenson Royal Arch Captain Clifford Webster Master Third Veil Robert Clark Master Second Veil Ralph Carlton Master First Veil and A F Whitmire Sentinel.
Jurors are summoned this Tuesday morning to be impaneled for one jury case in the adjourned session of the December term district court. Judge I. J. Nisley will preside at the court.
Thomas Reelected County Chairman. Thomas was reelected chairman of the county Agriculture Conservation Association committee at a precinct delegates meeting in the ACA office Friday afternoon. New officers include Muriel R. Crosby as vice chairman and Floyd L. Fleming as third member, with several alternates named. Precinct committees were chosen in county wide elections ending December 8.
The Sidney Auxiliary pledges full endorsement of the four point major legislative program The American Legion will push in 1948. It covers veterans housing and income provisions, veterans employment safeguards, universal military training, court martial reform, outlawing the Communist Party, and strengthening the Veterans Employment Service. Included are calls for higher income thresholds for widows and orphans and extended Social Security credits for veterans.
A collision at 6 40 Thursday morning at Linden and 14th Avenue caused heavy damage. A 1947 Buick Tudor driven by Mrs P J Heaton heading east on Linden was struck by a 1938 DeSoto driven by Mrs Neil Diederich. Heaton’s car damaged about 200 dollars, the De Soto about 50. Patrolman Carpenter investigated.
The Chamber of Commerce entertained over fourteen hundred youngsters at Christmas parties at the Fox Theatre on Friday and Saturday. Sidney children attended Friday afternoon and out of town youngsters Saturday morning. Secretary Gordon Tobin said the movie program was popular and free candy was handed out at each program’s end.
City officials announced paving costs for Districts 13 through 18 totaling about 145000 dollars with 80000 dollars in additional intersection bonds. Property owners may pay by February 1 to avoid 6 percent interest, with ten year installments allowed by law. Interest is deductible if payments are delayed until due.

A suit for 1571.50 brought by Verne Wheeland against Bu-Pro Company et al was dismissed, according to a petition in the district court clerk’s office dated December 10.
