First woman mayor leads Sidney council as Kokjer declines

Lee-Ellen Matzke elected Sidney's mayor by a 4-0 vote at the city council meeting marking the first female mayor in the city. Rex Swanson and Dr D J Garcia assumed roles on the council, with Garcia elected vice president. Ed Haupt backed Kokjer for continued housing authority chair, while Ed Bauman stepped down to make room for Swanson. Weather forecasters predicted sunny, mild December days with highs in the 40s to 50s and overnight lows in the teens to 20s.

Six Elected to Cheyenne County Chamber Board of Directors

Six individuals including Gary Custer and Don Schrader of Sidney Jim Worth of Dalton Robert Zuhlke of Gurley John Echternach of Lodgepole and Doug Reetz of Potter were chosen for two year terms on the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce board Their installation and officer election were postponed to December 23 at Buffalo Bend with a social hour at 6 30 p m and dinner at 7 30 p m They succeed Lew Wilson John Laing Elaine Weyerts Don Winkelman E K Yanney and Gordon Reed of various towns.

No more flu clinics in area

Nebraska health official says no further swine flu clinics planned for the southern Panhandle. Chadron and Scottsbluff held recent sessions. 18 to 24 year olds may obtain boosters at physicians’ offices. Cheyenne County showed strong turnout with 47 percent of eligible residents vaccinated.

Telegraph earns Blue Ribbon citation in national review

The Sidney Telegraph has been named a Blue Ribbon Newspaper by the National Editorial Foundation in the 1977 Blue Ribbon Evaluation. Twenty five criteria measure community service against national standards. 334 papers nationwide earned the designation. Telegraph Publisher Larry Boyer notes it may be the first time Sidney has won this honor.

Nearly 60 farm women in Sidney create Women Involved in Farm Economics to campaign for higher farm prices. A 14 member steering committee was named and plans include letters to officials, media outreach, and outreach to diverse supporters across the nation.
