Nuclear powered ships enter combat on Enterprise mission
Gary R. Conley, Airman Apprentice USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Conley of Sidney, recalls December 2, 1965 when nuclear powered warships first fought. He serves aboard USS Enterprise as it led air strikes against the Viet Cong in South Vietnam, with USS Bainbridge aiding on the carrier's flank. The two ships recently completed a 30 day, 16 000 mile voyage from Norfolk to the Western Pacific to join the Seventh Fleet, marking the shift of four atomic powered surface ships to the Pacific Fleet. Nuclear reactors promise nearly unlimited range.
