City Council May Take Stand Tonight On Site Of Interchange On I-80

City council may discuss Interstate 80 interchange sites southeast of Sidney and directly south at the hill crest tonight The state favors the southeast site while council members back the southern location The council must record its stance before the final decision later this month Construction of I-80 here is reportedly planned for 1969 The council can only recommend but the state aims to cooperate with local wishes The meeting agenda includes zoning, licenses, East Flood Dike project, police cars, and interchange propositions from the State.

Christmas Spirit Prevails in Sidney Christmas Contest

Christmas lighting contest entries in Sidney must be received by 5 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce office. A free prize drawing for youngsters 14 and under will be held at courthouse square Saturday night December 18 at seven o'clock. Numerous local businesses participate as the retail committee promotes Christmas shoppers with extended hours and Santa Claus appearances from December 17 to 24. Candy for Santa is provided by KSID and The Sidney Telegraph, the high school band plans carols downtown and at the shopping center on December 18.

Potter Bidder Gets I-80 Job In Nebraska Plan

Missouri Valley Construction Co. of Grand Island topped four of five I-80 contracts west of North Platte in Lincoln with bids totaling 1.924 million for paving 12.6 miles and 1.385 million for grading plus 73,995 for culverts and 172,063 for three bridges. W. L. Schmidt Co. of Potter bid 50,823 for fencing. Other projects include Dawes County N-2 segment near Crawford with Roadmix Inc. at 108,296, and Banner N-88 near Harrisburg with Knight Bros Inc at 195,846 for grading and railing. Missouri Valley also bid 32,406 for a bridge.

Accreditation for Rest Home Receives Three Year Grant

Memorial Rest Home in Sidney has earned a three year accreditation from the American Hospital Association. Administrator Leo Bolin said a recent inspection covered the home facilities and services and found full compliance with current standards. The accreditation enables eligibility for federal or other programs relying on AHA guidelines. Memorial Hospital also holds full AHA accreditation.

Winter Holidays Panhandle Forecast and Snow Outlook

Forecasters predict mostly cloudy skies with light snow tonight and Tuesday. Temperatures will run 7 to 14 degrees below normal through Saturday with highs near 30 to 40 and lows down to 5 to 15. Heavier snow is expected later in the week as cold air arrives.

Sioux Favored for Western Nebraska Rehabilitation Center

Western Nebraska officials back establishing a state rehabilitation center at the Sioux Army Depot. The center would serve mentally retarded, physically handicapped, and recovered patients in the western third of the state with high quality facilities. Fred Novak cited strong support from over 200 officials via questionnaires and noted blended federal and state funding possibilities with 15 staff and initial capacity for 25 patients, expanding to 50.

Safflower Price Guarantees Raised for 1966 Season

Pacific Vegetable Oils Corp raises safflower price guarantees to 80 dollars per ton for nonlong term contracts at the Sidney plant and 82 dollars per ton for long term contracts in the five state area Nebraska Colorado Wyoming South Dakota and Kansas. Seed set at six dollars per hundredweight aims to cut cost to around 1.20 to 1.50 per acre, with a possible bonus on March 1, 1967 if markets are favorable. Plant continues safflower processing despite three-year yield declines and losses, while also processing soybeans to test alternative yields.

County Officials Urged To Beautify Roads and Election Names Two From This Area

Nebraska county officials were urged to join a national highway beautification program. State Engineer John Hossack urged zoning controls on commercial development along access roads and better appearance of county roads. The Nebraska County Officials Association adjourned its three day convention at the Castle Hotel with various officers elected for County Commissioners Association and related groups.

Republican governor candidate to meet Nebraskans in Sidney

Norvert T. Tiemann, a Republican governor candidate, will visit Sidney Wednesday for a get acquainted meeting. He will attend a 10:00 a.m. coffee at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel and invites interested people from all parties to attend and discuss Nebraska issues.

Morrill County School Changes Get State's OK

Lincoln The State School District Reorganization committee approved a comprehensive Morrill County plan to form two unified districts. One would combine Bayard with eight rural districts, valued at about $9 million with about 700 students. The other would pair Bridgeport with 20 rural districts, valued around $2 million with over 950 students.
