Oil drilling pace rises in western Nebraska. discovery near Potter

December activity hits a yearly high with twelve rigs across Banner Kimball Cheyenne Morrill and Scotts Bluff counties. A promising discovery comes from Cheyenne County two miles north of Potter where Petroleum Inc recovered 2780 feet of oil in a drill stem test at No 1 Ruhrdorf. The No 7 Graff in Graff Field produced only water, Marathon Oil notes dim prospects for oil though future use as a water injector is possible. Pan-American Petroleum Superior Oil Sam Gary and Baumgartner Oil report new wells and ten drilling sites planned in Cheyenne Banner Morrill and Scotts Bluff counties by year end.

Geo Puckett Rites Monday in Sidney Nebraska obituary

George Washington Puckett 92 of Sidney died December 10 at Memorial Hospital after a three day stay. Survived by wife Almeda and 13 nieces and nephews including Ross Handley of Gurley. Born November 14 1872 in Mount Sterling Ohio moved to Kansas in 1886. Married Henrietta Clark in 1892. she died July 9 1957. Married Almeda Weber March 10 1958. Member of Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge. Services Monday December 14 at 2 p.m. from Craig Mortuary with Reverends Handley and Stayton officiating. Burial Greenwood Cemetery.

Cow Killed In Tuesday Crash Near Lodg Pole

A cow was killed and about 300 in damage occurred to a 1962 car driven by 17 year old Gary Kayton of Chappell. The crash happened around 8 PM Tuesday on a county road east of Lod gepole. The cow was owned by From and Son and the driver escaped injury.

Well Known Farmer Dies in Gurley Nebraska

Otto F. Horst 63, a prominent Gurley farmer, died suddenly of a heart attack Thursday noon in his doctor’s office. Funeral set for 2 pm Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church Gurley with Rev. Albert Prouty. burial in Sidney. Survived by widow Edna, one son Virgil, one daughter Adella, four sisters and four brothers, six grandchildren and stepchildren. Memorial designated to the Lutheran Hour.

Clubs Return After Ditch Find At Packing Plant

The new golf clubs found days ago in a ditch by the packing plant are back at their home. Chief of Police Sol Willis said the clubs were claimed by Don MacRae, professional at the golf course. The items had been stolen from the clubhouse.

Sidney Occupational Training School Opens Monday

Enrollment tops 120 for the Sidney Occupational Training School opening Monday at Sioux Army Depot. Supt. Russell Pedersen says staff is nearly complete with food service faculty to be added soon. The depot furnishes space and equipment for on the job training as 325 unemployed individuals, including 16 from Wyoming, prepare for courses in auto mechanics, auto body, tractor mechanics, office work, and culinary trades.

Christmas drawing draws crowd in Sidney chamber event

A large crowd attended the first of the Christmas drawings sponsored by the Sidney Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday. Prizes were gift certificates won by A. J. Lovell of Chappell for $50, Mrs. Helen Cook for $25, Raymond J. Smith and Mrs. Faye Walsh for $10 each, and Bill Gilgren for $5. The jackpot was boosted for the next drawing on Monday, Dec 21, with six prizes of $75, $50, $25, $10, $10 and $5.
