Nebraska 4-H Members to Tour Chicago for Grain Clinic

Lincoln Nebraska two 4-H Club youths Roland Rexroth and Frank Schultz Jr. were selected to attend the 14th annual 4-H Grain Marketing Clinic and tour in Chicago January 26-28 in recognition of their achievements in Nebraska. The program seeks to teach grain marketing fundamentals and industry flow from farm to consumer with support from Chicago Board of Trade Cooperative Extension and National 4-H Service Committee.

License Sale Opens Jan 4 in Cheyenne County

The Cheyenne County license department will begin selling new black on white motor vehicle plates at 8 am Monday January 4. A new pickup method places tax statements in the courthouse lobby with Miss Sharrell Talich assisting. The window operates 8 am to 12 noon and 1 to 4 pm on weekdays, with reserved numbers to be claimed in January and shelves open to all from February 1. By March 1 vehicles without 1964 1965 plates will be in violation. mail orders incur 50 cent postage.

Panhandle Weather Outlook Mostly Cloudy With Snow Flurries

The Nebraska Panhandle expects mostly cloudy conditions this afternoon tonight and Thursday. A few snow flurries are possible tonight and Thursday with lows from 15 to 25 and highs in the 30s. The five day forecast calls for temperatures Thursday through Monday to average 4 to 8 degrees below normal, with frequent changes. Highs around 30 and lows 5 to 15, periods of light snow likely.

Nebraska observers report light to six inch snow providing beneficial moisture for wheat shielding from wind erosion. Western topsoil moisture is limited signaling need for winter protection. Wheat overall good to excellent though with shallow growth, castor bean harvest slow, other crops nearly all harvested, and livestock gaining weight as cattle move to feed lots.

Sidney City Water Department reports a sharp rise in income for August to November, rising from $39,084.39 in 1963 to $49,518.99 in 1964 amid drought. Wells Nos 1 2 3 are two feet lower, No 4 four feet lower, and Nos 6 7 three feet lower, though no water shortage is indicated.

Forrest Belieu Named Sidney Jaycee Boss of the Year

Forrest Belieu owner and manager of The Seven-Up Bottling Co. was named Sidney Boss of the Year by the Sidney Junior Chamber of Commerce. The Telegraph Printing Co. Inc. won the Outstanding Business of the Year award with publisher Phil Gottschalk receiving the honor. Distinguished Service Award went to Ed Haupt, Silver Key to Bill Folkerts, and Bronze Key to Bill VanMeter. Attendance at the Elks Lodge dinner fell short of the goal.

Vets Club Grand Opening Friday

The remodeled Vets Club at 815 21st Avenue will reopen Friday night. A large new bar area replaces Zerr's appliance service space adjacent to the VFW Post Home. Doors lead to the Post Home for dancing banquets and meetings with Hadley Barrett and his orchestra providing music and opening favors of roses and cigars. Dick Peetz manages a 64 seat lounge. the post operates the lodge.

Golf clubs found in ditch near packing plant

Chief of Police Sol Willis reports several new golf clubs found Tuesday afternoon in a ditch east of Sidney by the packing plant. Estimated value at least 250 dollars. Carl Crouse a Sidney High School teacher and a Driver Education student discovered them while driving county road by the plant. police seek information.

Lorenzo Man Dies Monday

Herman C. Westphalen, 72, a well known farmer near Lorenzo, died Monday night of a heart attack. Funeral set for Friday at 2 p.m. in the E U B Church Peetz, burial in Greenwood Cemetery Sidney. Survived by widow Maurine, son Vernon of Denver, daughter Caroline Fehringer of Peetz, two sisters Amelia Lamp and Minnie Jensen of Manning Iowa, six grandchildren. Born March 30 1892 in Carroll County Iowa he moved to Cheyenne County 46 years ago from Manning. Married February 9 1927 at Sterling Colorado. Burial by Gehrig & Son Funeral Home.

Santa Visits Sidney With Daily Calls Through Dec 23

Santa will be in Sidney daily from December 16 to 23 except Sunday December 20, at 1016 Illinois St. from 2 to 6 pm for visits and treats. He will roam downtown December 11-12 from 4 to 8 pm meeting shoppers. Two giveaways by the Chamber of Commerce were held at 2:30 pm near Illinois St and 10th Ave, with more on December 21. Residents are urged to decorate for the Christmas lighting contest with judging to follow.

Courthouse Lighted Again After Two-Year Gap

The Cheyenne County courthouse will be lit again this year. County clerk Ralph Englert says delays kept lights off for two years. Workers from the city are wiring and hanging the lights and decorations, expected to be ready this Thursday.
