H. Hoper, Alliance city manager, has secured a new coal contract that runs from November 15 to July 14, 1947. The agreement lowers the municipal plant’s unit electricity cost and supports negotiations with REA to supply electric energy for the new distribution system, with coal price a major factor in farm and ranch rates.
Kimball County commissioners announce a special advisory committee to assist in planning and building the Kimball County Hospital. County Attorney L. V. Halcomb states the group acts only in an advisory capacity, with authority and responsibility resting with the county commissioners. Members named include E. J. Horrum, Dix Chas Fenstrom, Bushnell, Dr. H. R. Alden, W. M. Rodman, and J. J. Cromie, Kimball.
Bridgeport attorneys filed a Supreme Court brief admitting Consumers Public Power district pursued proper remedy by seeking an injunction, but arguing the district court was correct to deny relief. They contend the city passed an ordinance four years earlier to take the property, the condemnation hearing proceeded, and Consumers had notice via the ordinance and compensation hearing.
Amerada Petroleum declared the Crawford Oster Meyer well, five miles north of Crawford, dry after a drill stem test at 4690 feet. Chief geologist Roger Dennison and production superintendent W T Ricketts analyzed a saturated core then later announced in Chadron the well would be abandoned. This marks the fourth dry test in the Chadron Crawford area with a fifth test, twenty miles south of Hot Springs, drilling at 2150 feet.
A district receives five new Farm Security Administration loans for pump irrigation, ranging from 3500 to 5000 dollars. County supervisor C O Sawyer reports eligibility in two weeks, with TSA specialists Ellithorpe and Anderson to survey farms. Irrigation目标 planned by next spring, with drilling estimates, topographical maps, and land earning capacity analyses to guide water delivery.
Cheyenne County Farmers Union reports a fifty percent membership rise from 611 in 1944 to over 900 this year at its annual convention. Sidney's Maroons travel to Curtis Thursday and North Platte Friday for tough eastern foes as coach Leo Shuman readies a full-strength squad after recent wins over Sunol and Lodgepole. Western Nebraska games include Lyman at Kimball Tuesday and a Scottsbluff doubleheader Friday featuring Bearcats against Bridgeport and Hot Springs.
County AAA leaders met in Sidney and reelected James H. Campbell as county chairman. Officers named for the coming year include Arno W. Thomas as Vice Chairman Clarence A. Mellburg as Third Member Arvin W. Livingston as First Alternate and Raymond Weed as Second Alternate.
James M. Lynch, 92, longtime Crook area homesteader five miles northwest of Crook, Colo., died last Friday morning in Brush. He homesteaded in 1888 and was widely known in the Crook neighborhood. In recent years he lived with his son Ray near Crook due to failing health.
Plans by REA leaders promise blessings to farmers in Cheyenne County but progress is slow. Borcher, Pine Bluffs REA director, says no work may occur soon despite $667,000 authorized for Section C11. Contracts north of Potter and Dix were let but rejected at the St. Louis office. Rep. Miller is being lobbied to break the bottleneck. Supplies exist, but funds remain inadequate to electrify all area farms. The REA aims to speed work as more funds become available, with farmers investing about $1,000 per site for electrical lines.
County War Finance Chairman Glenn Spearow urges Cheyenne county residents to count December Savings Bonds toward Victory Loan goals even after December 8. He stresses continued E Bond buying for the final three weeks to finish quotas and support returning servicemen with pay, medical care, and mustering out benefits. Several counties have already met E Bond goals.
Carl Ziegler and E. L. Hoover of the Merchants Committee urged Sidney city officials to study expanding street lighting. They favored permanent floodlights at Tenth and Illinois and other downtown locations to improve appearance. The council would task Verne Livingston to assess feasibility and cost under the wattage utility system.

Paul Bundy, longtime Safeway manager from Sterling Colorado, becomes manager of the Scottsbluff Safeway at 1709 First Avenue succeeding Frank Guirk. Bundy has 12 years with Safeway and prior posts include Chadron and Kimball stores. his parents live in Sidney.
Stanley W. Weaver paid a twenty dollar fine and costs in county court for operating a car without license plates and without a registration certificate. Alois Divis paid ten dollars and costs for a stop sign violation.
Mayor doubts offer from National Housing authorities to transfer management rather than ownership of Sioux Villa. Letter confusion over villa type and eligibility for distressed or returning service families. city seeks clarity on construction and cost. Officials note 400000 dollar monument could aid the community if deal works out, while 175 units sit vacant at taxpayers’ expense.
Councilman J K Mahr urged the city council to hire a full time aide who would serve as a city fact finder and planning expert in cooperation with the chamber of commerce. The proposed officer would share duties with the clerk and treasurer and work under council approval. The idea aims to improve efficiency, attract business such as a potential Canadian flour mill, and centralize planning for Sidney without creating a city manager. The council showed interest but took no action, planning further discussion with the chamber of commerce.
The Sidney chamber invites all youngsters and their parents to a Saturday December 15 gathering at the city auditorium at 1 30 PM. Santa Claus will visit in person as part of the annual Good Will Christmas event hosted by local business houses. Grant Mathews will lead the Sidney band with old fashioned tunes, movies will be shown, and free treats will be handed out. Parents are asked to accompany children under six to ensure safety. Mayor D R Thomas appointed a special committee to assess Sidney public works needs and draft recommendations for federal grant funding. City Attorney Heaton chairs with Councilmen Dorwart and Mahr. Likely top projects include sewage disposal, an underpass or overpass on the north side, and possibly the airport. Authorities expect a dollar matching program and a nationwide plan next year.
Two Italian service unit members at the Sioux Ordnance Depot escaped in a jeep Friday night. FBI, city county and state police hunted them, but the incident was brief. They were picked up at Sterling and returned with the jeep. Names listed as Marzella Ezio and Facincani Vittorio. Uniforms bore green and white patches with Italy across them.
The 24 Nebraska 4-H clubbers who attended the 1945 National 4-H Club congress in Chicago arrived home Friday after an eventful week filled with award ceremonies. A group of 14 tractor club members traveled to Chicago supported by the Standard Oil Company of Indiana, including Verlin Livingston of Cheyenne County.
The mercury dipped to zero early Monday morning for the coldest reading of the season. By mid morning the temperature had risen to fifteen above zero. The body of Norman Fisher arrived in Sidney Friday and funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Potter Methodist church. Fisher died in a Pacific airplane crash weeks earlier off Hawaii. reports blame ground crew failure and refueling issues aboard a big transport plane piloted by Fisher. Craig Home for Funerals was in charge. the body was brought from Hawaii to San Diego by boat.
The Telegraph cannot print an eight page edition today because eight page rolls are unavailable. A shipment of newsprint is promised this month but without a firm arrival date. There is enough stock of four and six page rolls to print six ten or twelve page editions, or larger if needed, while eight page rolls remain shortage. The paper expects gradual improvement as labor and shipping issues ease.
Office personnel from six western Nebraska counties will meet in Bridgeport on Thursday December 13 to discuss office procedure. E W Johannesen, district supervisor, will conduct the all day session with representatives from Cheyenne Scotts Bluff Dawes Box Butte Sheridan and Morrill counties.
The district court term started with a long calendar and has recessed until Monday December 17 when a jury and equity cases likely will be heard. Judge I J Nisley left town last Friday but will return next week when attorneys expect to present their cases.
John Martinosky Sidney post master was elected president of the chamber of commerce at the annual election Monday noon. He succeeds O. B. Wolfe with the next meeting December 24. New 1946 officers include Dorwart Lowe Merrick Mahr Wright Story. Forty-one members voted under a mail poll system. The group plans post war improvements and a new hotel. hospital work and an overpass project are under study. Martinosky urged unity with the city council to push Sidney forward in 1946.
