New Trial Ordered for 8 Officers in Tear Gas Case

The Nebraska Supreme Court divided on municipal versus county liability and ordered a new trial for eight officials over a 1964 tear gas incident in Sidney. Landmesser, then 19, was injured when a shell exploded while a neighbor handled it. The court upheld immunity for the city and county but sent the individual defendants to the jury. The eight officers named are Ronald Ahlberg Sol Willis Sanford Butcher Irvin Smith Myron Peter John Bauer Jr Gene Morris Kermit Brumbaugh.

Nebraska rail chief laments UP plan to drop daylight trains

Chairman Fred N. Peterson of the Nebraska Railroad Commission says he is perturbed by Union Pacific's request to discontinue Trains 5 and 6, the state’s sole daylight passenger runs, noting Burlington also seeks to drop Trains 7 and 8. He blames Congress for shifting mail to trucks and says the commission will participate in Interstate Commerce Commission hearings.

Occasional light snow this afternoon with about one inch accumulation and NW winds 15 to 25 mph. Tonight stays cold with low 5 to 15, high 25 to 35 Saturday partly cloudy. Dr. James Edwards was elected president elect of the Nebraska State Veterinary Association at its state convention in Lincoln. Dr. Jack Hadley of Aurora became 1967 68 president and L E McClaughry of Omaha was secretary treasurer. Senator Maurice Kremer of Aurora received honorary membership for leadership in agriculture and veterinary legislation. Stan Matzke Jr. of the State Technical School at Curtis outlined progress on the soon to begin Veterinary Technology Program in Curtis in October 1968.

Sidney Post Office Extends Window Hours for Christmas

Starting Monday December 11 the Sidney Post Office will stay open longer from 8 a.m. to 5 30 p.m. to handle Christmas mailing. Post Master Ferris Preble asks patrons to mail early and use street corner boxes for new deadline times as train dispatching from Sidney ends. All mail except airmail now moves by postal department trucks.

Loveland Man Otto Rauss Dies at 74

Otto Rauss 74 of Loveland Colorado died Thursday morning after a heart attack the previous day. A former Sidney resident he was uncle to Walter Stueve of Sidney and survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services set for Monday Dec 11 at 2 pm at Imanuel Lutheran Church Loveland.

Well Known Gurley Man Dies Thursday

George F. Ehlers 72, a Gurley farmer and World War I veteran, died at Memorial Hospital while being taken there with his wife for medical care after a sprained wrist. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Monday at Gurley Methodist Church with military graveside rites at Greenwood Cemetery Sidney. Gehrig and Son Funeral Home in charge. He was born April 6, 1895, in Hebron and lived in Cheyenne County since 1919. survived by his widow Ella VeLong, daughter Phyllis Heffelfinger, siblings Irvin, Gilbert, Irma, Leona, Erna, Melba, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Gerald Duane Crees 23 of Sidney died in a truck crash on Highway 385 near Gurley. He was born December 9 1944 at Gurley to Dewey and Iva Crees and married Judy Headley in 1965. Survived by widow, son Jerry Allen, daughter Shawnel, two sisters, and two. He worked for McClure Drilling. He died about 11 30 p.m. when his truck left the road and overturned in a borrow pit. Nebraska highway toll for 1967 reaches 401 fatalities.
