Nebraska grain dealers say four thousand railroad cars are needed to move the 1947 wheat crop to markets while supply runs as a trickle. Farmers face losses as rail layoffs and coal strike embargoes curb shipments. Elevators bulge with wheat and on farm storage is strained, risking spoilage if cars remain scarce.
Sidney high school basketball faces a dreary season with only one returning regular and four 1945 46 lettermen. Coach Leo Shuman introduces a new lineup around Mickey Holtman and bids for starting spots by Heng!, Jones, Vizina, and a group of hopefuls. He aims to win at least half despite likely heavy defeats.
The chamber of commerce will elect new officers for 1947 at the regular meeting Monday noon at Hasel's Cafe. The nominating committee slate lists FE L Hoover and Fred McHugh for president. County Treasurer Herbert Stevens reported Cheyenne County November tax receipts reached 213073.05 dollars, surpassing last year's figure and topping 1946 tax bills. About 34 percent of the 1946 levy was paid in November, with remittances forcing a one day office closure to catch up.
County commissioners and a council committee push for state and federal aid to build a non grade crossing over the Union Pacific right of way. A new routing for a farm to market road uses 13th avenue as Sidney’s approach linking to old No 19, with emphasis on avoiding federal objections to grade crossings. Sidney might have coal enough to last until Christmas if temperatures stay mild. The main concern remains how quickly coal shipments can resume once the strike ends.

The J A Vogt farm sale set for Tuesday December 10 is advertised in The Telegraph. Vogt plans to leave the farm and move to Dalton and will hold the sale four miles west of Dalton starting at eleven o clock with lunch served by The Altar Society of Dalton. Col Rapp handles the sale.
Spectacular fire in a Sidney Upte grove warehouse destroyed the second floor after a gasoline explosion. Firemen fought two hoses on adjacent buildings to halt spread while a south wind helped shield other structures. The $40,000 blaze, heavily clad in galvanized metal, raged for hours and remained under control after 48 hours.
The trial of Ernie Stimka accused of shooting with intent to kill began in district court. Most of Wednesday was taken by jury selection as proceedings continued to noon Thursday with uncertainty on reaching the jury that day. Stimka, a former Keith County resident, is charged with shooting his wife Bertha during a family estrangement and later harming himself. He previously appeared to enter a plea which Judge J. L. Tewell did not accept.
Vandals have damaged eighteen insulators on lines north of Sidney as REA posts a $50 reward for arrest and conviction. Officials urge parents to warn children against shooting at electrical connections vital to service and virtually irreplacable.
The Army ordered sprinkler system installations at Sioux Ordnance Depot Sidney and Black Hills Ordnance Depot Igloo South Dakota as part of district construction projects. Col. Craig Smyser, district engineer for the United States Engineer office, disclosed the details this week.

A 1946 Chevrolet owned by B M Cheney of Scottsbluff was stolen from a downtown street Wednesday night. Cheney and Frank Wells picked up a hitchhiker named Green who claimed he was bound for Salt Lake City. Green visited at a hotel, left his hat and coat, then disappeared. Police link a second theft at Kimball and probe a Scotts Bluff County suspect released from jail. Deputies note the car was wired to start, implying knowledge of the vehicle.

Practical gifts valued at about five dollars will be assembled into packages for disabled veterans nationwide. donations due by December 12.
A large fire destroyed a warehouse causing extensive damage while federal embargo notices limited rail freight shipments and parcel post. The Interstate Commerce Commission banned many international parcel post items though military overseas shipments were exempt. The Office of Defense Transportation cut coal locomotive passenger service by 25 percent and overall by 5 percent. Packages faced strict size and weight limits with new rules on length and girth.
A wartime embargo tightens mail rules effective today. First class mail over five pounds and parcels over five pounds or 18 inches by 60 inches are barred, with several exceptions including live poultry, cut flowers, eggs, medicines, serums, and hospital supplies. Domestic limits apply to Canada Mexico and U S territories as coal conservation prompts the move.
Ernest Knackstedt and Sons win approval to lay a concrete apron in front of a service station and enlarge a cafe on west Illinois street. They will widen parking within twenty feet of the curb and seek removal of part of the curb to allow easier access. The station and cafe will be in the same block and separated by about the width of one lot.
The United States Navy seeks eligible young men for specialized training or general service. A Navy Recruiting Office representative will be in Sidney at the post office on December 10 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Benefits under the G I Bill are available for a limited time.
A major midday blaze obliterated the two story Uptegrove warehouse at 12th and Hickory Tuesday. The 30 year old landmark, leased to B O Tracy and housing Tracy's Bearing Service, with subleases to The Joe A Gideon Inc and Ives Green Haldeman Co, was total loss. Fire fighters from The Sioux Ordnance Depot aided as wind aided spread toward nearby buildings including Farmers Co op Grain elevator. Fire began shortly after eleven and rapid flames from the second floor engulfed the top story. investigators blamed a faseline explosion. No serious injuries reported beyond burns to Francis Clark of Ives Green Haldeman Co.
