Sidney Man's Sister and Husband Escape Hotel Fire
Major Gen. Paul W. Baade and Mrs. Baade, sister and brother-in-law of Harold P. Craig of Sidney, survived the Wincecoff Hotel blaze in Atlanta last Saturday morning. They were rescued from the third floor by ladder and their escape was recounted on a national radio news review. Baade, a West Point graduate and WWII veteran, commanded the 35th Infantry, 3rd Division. His first assignment after graduation was at Ft Warren in Cheyenne.

Rites Held for Potter Farmer Ben Warrelman
Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church for Ben Warrelman a 40 year old Potter resident who died after a two week illness following an operation. He was born in Germany Nov 5 1906 naturalized in 1943 and survived by his wife two daughters Mathilda and Edna his brothers John Henry and Carl two sisters and his mother in Germany. He had lived in Cheyenne county since 1935 farming northeast of Potter. Pallbearers were Frank Mueller Walter Hilpert Ernest Gerler Anton Steffens Joe Gerler and Louis Seeman.

Early Day Settler In This Area Succumbs
Orvin C. Phillips, who moved to western Nebraska in 1886 and helped settle Kimball County, died November 30 at age 172. He arrived as a child, lived first at Kimball then Sidney, and was a longtime member of the Frank Welsh Masonic Lodge in Sidney. He is survived by a brother and two sisters, including Mrs. Charles Griffiths of Sidney. Funeral services were held last week at Kimball.

Draft Extension For At Least One Month
The army announced on Thursday that the draft holiday will be extended through January.
