War Prisoners Help Harvest In Panhandle Area
German prisoners of war in Scotts Bluff county and southern Sioux county aided harvests this fall, collecting about 2,210,023 bushels of potatoes and topping 12,758 acres of beets amid 32,000 beet acres in the region. About 2,000 to 3,000 prisoners worked, with a peak day of 3,179 on November 7.

Child Burn Injury Delays Family Trip Near Town

War Fund Drive Hits Over Quota Figure Cheyenne Leads
Cheyenne was one of ten Nebraska counties over the top in the United War Fund drive as of November 29, reaching 113 percent of its quota and tying Kimball. Frontier Otoe Hamilton Howard Valley Buffalo Devel and Hitchcock also exceeded or matched their goals. The Panhandle district lagged at under 54 percent. Sheridan County was 97 percent, Morrill 16 percent, Scotts Bluff 28 percent, and Custer county reported zero. The state needed $100000 to hit its goal.

Redington Pioneer Dale Waitman Dies at 64
Dale Waitman known as a Redington pioneer and rancher died at his home Thursday after 57 years in the range country. Born January 12, 1881 in Urbania, he moved to western Nebraska at age seven with his family. Survived by wife Anna, five sisters, four brothers, and his late father Price P Waitman who first came to the area in 1888.

John Armstrong veteran Union Pacific employee with nearly 25 years service died Monday noon from heart complications after losing his right foot in a railroad accident the previous Thursday evening at the 18th avenue crossing. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition after being struck by a backing locomotive, pinned beneath a wheel, and extricated with effort.
