Sidney will host the fourth district American Legion convention next Tuesday December 8 with hundreds expected from every post in the district. Nebraska convention tour runs from December 8 to 16. Key officers including Commander Vern Taylor and Adjutant R C Patterson will attend along with auxiliary leaders and national director Hubert Chaillaux who will speak at Crawford and Sidney meetings.
J F Whitelock 78 a Peetz pioneer and father of Frank J Whitelock died November 24 in San Bernardino California after five years of ill health He was known as a real estate dealer during the land boom days in the Peetz Sidney area Survivors include his wife and son Mrs Max Curtze of San Bernardino and a daughter none listed
An automobile belonging to Ted Hecker was stolen from a downtown street Tuesday night and recovered later abandoned between Lodge Pole and Chappell. Sheriff Schulz said the gasoline tank was empty and no trace of the thieves was found. A farmer east of Lodge Pole reported an abandoned car along the highway. Schulz reclaimed the machine. It was not damaged.
State Treasurer Hall distributed the November gasoline tax share to 93 Nebraska counties. The total included a $195,651 deduction for the state assistance fund and refunds to dealers. Western region payouts listed for Banner, Box Butte, Cheyenne, Deuel, Kimball, Scotts Bluff, and Morville with varied amounts.
Basketball enthusiasts have called a 7:30 PM Monday meeting in the city auditorium basement to discuss starting a cage league in Sidney. Several men back the idea and substantial interest is noted.
The fourth district convention of the American Legion auxiliary will be held at the Methodist church in Sidney next Tuesday December 8. Registration begins at 8 45 a m with the session at 9 30 led by District President Winnie Meyer. Distinguished guests include Nell Krause department Legion vice president Mary Lou Bowersox department president Alma Arm Strong department national defense chairman and others whose addresses will be newsworthy. Luncheon served in the church basement at noon free to delegates and alternates but a descent charge for members and guests not officially representing posts. The banquet with the American Legion convention will be at St Patrick's auditorium at 6 30 tickets 75 cents. Local auxiliary officials urge broad attendance and early luncheon ticket purchase due to expected large turnout. Continued on Page 8 Col 1.
Fred Burchit, returned from Los Angeles by Sheriff Schulz, was sentenced to two years in the state reformatory for men after pleading guilty to a car theft charge. Police traced him via a photo of his Santa Ana girlfriend and a personal card found in the stolen Barney Barnhart car. He was arrested in a downtown Los Angeles pawn shop while attempting to buy a gun. He had worked in North Platte valley towns before the Sidney theft.
County commissioners and officials from western Nebraska travel with Thomas OConnell of Sidney to the Caterpillar factory at Peoria Illinois. The group plans to join colleagues in Omaha for a special eastbound train, in a second factory outing by Sidney Tractor Machinery Co. to acquaint officials with the Peoria operation.
Robert Cleary, nabbed by Columbus authorities, is linked to the theft of Merna Radcliffe’s car in Sidney and a Sidney junior high break in. Investigators tie him to a Reno robbery on September 4, with loot including a pistol, jewelry, and coins. Sheriff Schulz notes part of the loot sold in Salt Lake City. police continue probe.
The Kings Daughters announce limited finances will prevent full distribution of Christmas baskets this year. Roasts will be supplied to all listed needy families and some baskets may be possible if funds permit. The group has long served the poor and aged at Christmas, and members regret not completing the usual service while urging reports of extreme cases.
Deadline is Saturday December fifth for employees to return their SS5 social security cards to local post offices. After December 5 forms must go to the social security board in Washington and completion of the employee record will be delayed. Many errors have been found on the cards and employees are urged to correct them. some have not yet responded and should do so by tomorrow to avoid delay.
Denver newspapers report the Colorado highway department allotted $200,000 to improve the Peetz highway both north and south of Peetz. The project ties into the Denver-Black Hills highway via Nos. 113 and 19. Cheyenne county commissioners plan to seek state funds to widen and extend the Nebraska end from Lorenzo to the Colorado state line.
The Telegraph unveils a pre Christmas edition sent to every home in Cheyenne county. It showcases leading Sidney stores and business houses with extensive ads on Christmas merchandise. A focus on automobiles radios washing machines and electrical appliances highlights local value and service driving cross border trade into Colorado and Nebraska. Benjamin Lewis Walker of the Gurley district died Tuesday after a short illness. Born March 26 1866 in Bedford county Pennsylvania he moved to Iowa as a child and later to Yankton Dakota Territory. He married Mary Leila Brown May 9 1894 and lived in Limon county Maryland before moving in 1911 to Cheyenne county near Gurley where he was a noted agricultural leader. He died in a hospital Tuesday evening aged 70 years eight months and five days.
The Sidney High School junior class presented the three act play Big Brother at the senior high, earning an audience praise for a nearly professional performance. Directed by Miss Agnes Horton and Rex Reed, the cast and eight dancer ensemble delivered polished handling of the plot with strong individual portrayals. Cast praise went to James Hand, Bob Craig, Maxine Fulton, Kathryn Miller, Jeanette Larson, Chester Hansen, Marilee Ellsworth, and Abbott Slayter in key roles.
Farmers of Cheyenne and Kimball counties will load turkeys for the eastern market on Wednesday December 9 under the North Platte Valley Marketing association. Prices not yet posted, but prime No 1 birds may fetch slightly higher than Thanksgiving. Turkeys weighed in at Omaha Cold Storage north of the post office. Volume expected to exceed last month with stop grade birds bound for Atlantic seaboard markets. Several carloads to be shipped from Lodge Pole and North Platte valleys.
Youngsters from Sidney and surrounding area are invited to a free Saturday morning matinee at 10 30 at the Fox theatre. The event is a gift from Sidney merchants and the Fox theatre with the chamber of commerce merchants bureau coordinating. Santa Claus will visit Sidney streets for three Saturdays before Christmas handing out free candy. Beating seating will be limited. Fox management will seat as many children as possible. The show title isn’t announced but the program aims to delight boys and girls across the trade area. Parents should bring children early to ensure seating.
Nebraska farmers prepare to receive payments for participating in the 1936 federal soil fertility program. About 40 Platte County applications were approved and sent to Kansas City for payment, with around 350 more in auditing. First signed volunteer applications from Washington County arrived, with 319 farmers represented. The state office will process blanks as counties submit them, as measurings are nearly complete and staff accelerate office work. Wallace and Smith, along with Elton Lux, recently returned from a Washington conference shaping the 1937 program, presenting Nebraska recommendations from farmers statewide.
Mrs Catherine Doran, 90, mother of Rebecca Baker Henry Doran and Guy V Doran of Sidney, died at her home at 7 50 p m after nine months of illness. A longtime western Nebraska pioneer, she settled in Sidney in 1877 and was widow of Edmund Doran. Family members were summoned as she lapsed into coma yesterday noon. Continued on page 6 cal 1.
The district court delayed into the afternoon as Arthur Zike seeks $25,000 in damages from Clark Fuller and others. Jurors were questioned through 3 p.m. and final verdict came at 4 p.m. after two hours of testimony. The case arises from alleged affections involving Zike's wife Roene. Continued on Page 8.
Sidney attorney C. V. Sowards was found guilty of embezzling 152.15 from Doyle Sizemore while employed at the resettlement office. The jury deliberated under three hours and the verdict left sentence to be imposed later by Nisley. Sowards claimed a frame up and threatened to appeal to Lincoln after dismissal from the payroll.
Henry Johnson, eight year manager of Farmers Cooperative Gas and Oil, says he was discharged by the board effective December 31. The board voted 5 to 3 to replace him. Ferdi Welkhorst was not present. Johnson claims no chance to speak and says no successor has been named. he praises his eight year record and dividends.
Postmaster Larson advises employees to notify employers of their social security numbers to ensure proper listing and full credit when payments begin next month. He notes some employers group entries resulting in consecutive numbers, while others accept single reports creating varied numbers.
Sterling police arrested Roy Carson in connection with shoplifting at the C. A. West store in Sidney. Three pairs of pants were reported stolen. Carson refused extradition. Chief Rogers said no charges were filed due to cost. He was released after stolen merchandise was recovered.
The board of commissioners, alarmed by WPA roll cuts, plans to attend the Omaha convention with Gov. Cochran and State Engineer Tilley to push for highway work. They aim to promote No. 19 highway project from the Colorado line as a relief effort to provide jobs for displaced workers.
A district court jury deliberated about an hour Wednesday evening to find James M. McKelvey guilty of assault with intent to do great bodily harm. Bolinger of Lodge Pole testified and Bolinger showed signs of a beating. The alleged incident occurred November 28. no sentence was passed by Judge Nisley by 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
Two boys Burley Smith 11 and Harry Netherland 12 ran away from Mitchell Monday to avoid school punishment. They slept in a hay stack near Bayard and wandered east until a farmer spotted them Tuesday. Night Marshal Joe Tigue and Sheriff Schulz recovered the youths after they briefly hid, bringing them back to their Mitchell homes.
October cash income of farmers rose to 886 million dollars from 752 million in September and 802 million a year ago, driven by bigger cotton and hog sales and higher cotton, tomato, and dairy prices. The harvest peak for farm marketings and crop income occurs in October, though gains from crops were smaller this year due to lower late-season output for corn, apples, and potatoes.
The mercury dipped to 11 degrees above zero early Thursday morning marking the coldest reading in two weeks. A light Monday night snow formed a thin blanket with little moisture value while the forecaster predicted continued fair but cold weather for western Nebraska.

Nebraska Governor Cochran urged churches to observe universal Bible Sunday on December 6. He said the Holy Bible provides the fundamental background for proper relations among individuals and nations and that the world has improved as the Bible has become more widely distributed.
