Rev. Glenn G. Knight of First Baptist called for a united dry effort to secure a vote on prohibiting liquor and beer sales. He will organize a group, circulate petitions, and assist in other ways, citing Sunday sermon points on beer sales, minor purchases, and drunken driving amid church licensing disputes.
Bridgeport will adopt a new numbering and locating system for all rural homes within the Bridgeport Rural Fire Protection district. The plan promises instant location of every rural residence and farms, reducing fire-call guesswork and matching city address clarity. The system, already used in parts of Nebraska, assigns unique numbers to each rural home statewide to prevent confusion.
Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District official W. Hall reported the Lake McConaughy storage level fell by 44 thousand acre feet during July, from 146 300 to 0 acre feet by July 31, due to reduced inflow and rain in western Nebraska later in the month. Inflow rose from 156 to 1930 cubic feet per second between July 17 and July 31.
Denver speaker Nels Troelstrup told Plains Historical Society attendees that the nation wastes natural resources and fails to reduce debt. Salvation Army in Sidney nears completion of its last local fund campaign. John Markley reports continued participation in future United Fund drives as he notes prior aid to 58 families costing 457.42 dollars. With 186 dollars in fund, the drive aims at 1,420 dollars, while A F Weber resigns as treasurer after five years and Mrs. Joan Hart takes over.
May price for wheat set at 172 dollars per bushel by local elevator sources, reflecting market activity and regional pricing signals.
Sidney city inspector Dick Land issued another in a series of large commercial permits. Christ Construction Co. received a permit for a Carter Oil Co. service station at Tenth Avenue and Newton Street valued at 20000 dollars. Wayne Loch, owner of the Barch Motel in Sidney, has taken possession of the Sidney Hotel after its sale by former owner Henry Kluttz. Kluttz owned the hotel for over eight years and plans to move to Scottsbluff for real estate interests. Sale details were not disclosed.
Kimball County confirms its 12th polio case of the year as tests finally verify that Larry Butler son of Mr and Mrs Cecil Butler of Kimball is the afflicted individual. Initial testing last week left the case unconfirmed until the recent results.
The Sidney Zoo aims to add two black Himalayan bears from Wichita after an Omaha note sparked local interest. Donations and a drive raised 217 for housing and vaccinations, with Bauman offering temporary bear housing. A Sept 6 deadline from Wichita and a need for dirt to level Harvey’s lot stand as hurdles. Donors include Moore, Kurz, Farmers Insurance Group, and a sequence of local businesses and residents.
The Telegraph will not publish Monday as Cheyenne County observes Labor Day as a legal holiday. Government offices and most businesses will be closed, with virtually no offices open and no newspaper produced.
Herschel C. Essex age 54 of Pender Nebraska died Wednesday afternoon in Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital after a morning heart attack at 62014 Illinois Street. He worked as a steam pipe fitter on the Sidney Community Hotel project since July and earlier on a Southern California construction job. Burial plans were set in Pender with Craig Mortuary in charge. Born October 7, 1902, he was a son of Fred S and Pearl Campbell Essex. Survived by his mother, sister and brother.
Kenneth and Jane Wickstrom new officers at the Silver Dollar Bar Lounge and Dining room announce Get Acquainted Day. They recently purchased the Silver Dollar at auction from Aubrey and Mrs Haines. Free cigars for men and flowers for women will be offered Saturday.
Seven Boy Scouts of Troop 89 led by Myron Leveland plan a two day hiking trip from Lawrence Forks to Bridgeport through the Redington region with an overnight at Point of Rocks. The boys ages 11 to 16 will carry gear weighing about 35 pounds and de hydrated foods, with optional side trips to Courthouse and Jail Rocks if time permits.
Sidney police said 21 year old Charles Barnard faces a charge of driving while under the influence after a four car crash at 13th Avenue and King Street. Barnard’s 1949 car sped north, ran the curb near the bandshell, then struck a car driven by Paul Koehn, 63, of Sidney. The vehicles then hit parked cars owned by Vernus and Melvin Schwartz. No injuries reported. property damage over 700 dollars. A separate two car crash at 14th Avenue and Newton Street this morning caused about 475 dollars in damage to cars driven by Robert Arnold, 38, of Yoshkosh, and Robert Mc Coy, Jr., 33, of Sidney.
America's latest car the Edsel will be unveiled in Sidney Wednesday as part of a nationwide rollout. Wameley's Lincoln Mercury is the local Edsel dealer with the model lineup including 18 models and four series in a mid price range.
Thunderstorms with heavy rain swept across Cheyenne County overnight. In Sidney the 13th Avenue underpass flooded for about 30 minutes while water backed up on streets and into a farm home near Krueger’s, prompting pumping all night. Rain totals included 0.87 inch at Sidney, 0.37 inch at the airport, with more than an inch north of town. Wheat fields show early sprouting but wet conditions halt farming for days as city officials study a storm sewer plan to divert floodwater from the underpass.
Potter area wildcat oil wells Davis Oil Co Anderson No. 1 SWSE 19-15-52 and Don M. Rounds Wickhorst No. 1 NE NE 22-15-52 were plugged as dry holes. Western Drug Co at 836 Tenth Avenue plans a major facelift this weekend. Co owners N W Ladegard and E O Ladine say a glass front will be installed by Moore's Paint and Glass with Nienhaeser and Weber handling construction. The store ceiling will be elevated and new light fixtures added later.
