Lone Holiday Death In Cheyenne Area

Nebraska's Labor Day weekend saw its lone auto fatality in the southern Panhandle as Katherine Treadwell 32 of Berkeley California died after a one car crash near Chappell on Highway 30. Her brother in law Joan drove the car that left the road and overturned in a ditch.

Youth Charged After Car Hits Parked Vehicle

Sidney youth Larry Hobbs 16 faced careless driving charges after his 1946 car struck a parked 1953 model at 1605 Cedar Street around 11 25 a.m. Monday. Passenger Larry Schade 16 received a cut above the right eye. property damage estimated in the hundreds.

Taxing Man Claims Over Levies In Cheyenne County

Bill Lyons of the Union Pacific Railroad audits county school district levies and finances. He reports over levies in districts 1 4 5 9 12 36 64 75 and 97 with Sidney needing two mills less. Cars Collide Near Illinois Street In Sidney

Damage was estimated at 325 dollars after a collision between Dale Ver ton and Virgil Greever, both of Sidney. The crash occurred on 13th Avenue near Illinois Street at 4 36 p m yesterday. No injuries were reported.

State Severance Tax Hike Could Break $100000 Mark

Nebraska oil and gas severance tax may exceed $100000 for the first time in the 17 month history as August revenues are expected to surpass the figure. Daily production in late August averaged a record 55000 barrels of crude oil. For May to July, oil and gas sales totaled $17977526.50 with a 2 percent severance tax producing $279551.28 in that period.

Scottbluff man fined for DUI in Cheyenne County

Paul Clark, 24, of Scottsbluff, was fined 106 dollars and costs and had his driver's license suspended for six months after pleading guilty to driving while under the influence in Cheyenne County Court yesterday.

Public School Enrollment Edges Down at Sidney

Opening day figures show Sidney public schools with 1 868 pupils overall down from 1 914 a year earlier. Elementary enrollment rose to 1 367 from 1 205. secondary grades steady at 701, junior high 379 and high school 322. Parochial attendance drew away kindergartners. Don Larson failed to report as junior high coach, prompting extra assignments for five teachers and new coaching posts for Bill Harris and Arven Reynolds.

County Board Gets 2 Pleas Two Requests Tabled And Resolved

County commissioners approved closing a road segment near Lodgepole to curb trash dumping. They also granted a $25 monthly raise petition for eight courthouse workers. A $240 appraisal set for a 50 foot wide strip along section 16-15-47 enables a 100 foot right of way for a new federally funded road.

Parents Seek Safer Travel For Sidney Students

A 12 member parent delegation pressed the Sidney Board of Education about transporting about 28 east side students to city schools. With no district buses for out city routes and safety concerns, the board will revisit using District No. 2 bus or a Trailer City run, while urging parents to arrange immediate transportation.

Two New Building Permits Raised Sidney Construction Total

Sidney’s war construction total climbed to 758 549 with two new building permits issued by the city inspector. Art Cunningham sought a 20 000 permit for a garage and shop on the Fenske Addition fronting Highway 30 between the county fairgrounds access and a drainage ditch.

Men's Chorus Begins Monday New Members Sought

The Men's Community Chorus will start weekly meetings on Monday September 9 at 8 pm in the junior high vocal room. Directors William Fankhauser and George Hinn seek a large turnout and note that singing interest is all that is required to join. Last year 45 men participated and organizers hope for more in the second year.

Sidney Driver Fined for Drinking Count

Charles Barnard aged 21 of Sidney was fined 100 dollars and costs in Sidney Police Court after pleading guilty to driving while under the influence charged by the Sidney police following a four vehicle crash on 13th Avenue between Linden and King Streets. Judge Glenn Greenlee suspended his driver's license for six months. Also in court Dick Downing of Sidney was fined 35 dollars and costs for reckless driving and operating without a license.

Two Properties Sold at Auction in Cheyenne County

Emerald Pete Rapp auctioneer reports two Cheyenne County real estate transfers. Ivan A Walker bought the Lorenzo Walter Phelps property for 6350 dollars. Edwin Wellner property in Sidney sold for 11500 dollars to W E Gehrig.

Old Settlers Parade Winners Told at Lodgepole Event

Senator John C. Beaver spoke at the 33rd Old Settlers Reunion in Lodgepole while thousands watched the morning parade. Parade entries peaked at 140 with kids in prizes, including Best costumes and Decorated bikes. Winners across categories featured The Vegetable Man, Scarecrow, and multiple floats and old cars.

Maas No 2 leads Cheyenne County oil gains after Labor Day break

The Cheyenne County oil scene shows one new producer in the Maas No 2, NWSW of 18-17-52, with 650 feet of total fluid of which 470 feet was free oil. Three wells were dry or doubtful, including Johnson No 2. Numerous new locations and wildcats are listed across Kimball, Banner, Garden, Morrill, Kimball and Platte counties as crews resume field work.

Rites Tuesday For Mrs Jorgenson 68

Funeral services for Mrs A J Jorgenson 68 were held at Light Memorial Presbyterian Church. She died Friday morning in Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital after a week-long hospitalization. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery with Eastern Star rites. Pallbearers included Glenn Spearow Clark Grieve Kermit Moore Leo E Osborn Marius Christensen and George Barlow. Survivors include husband Albert James Jorgenson daughter Gwen dolyn McKenzie son Donald W Draper sister Mrs Raymond Scott and brother Arthur H Draper.
