Walking Metal locomotive marks spot where first Nebraska steam wagon quit
In 1862 at Nebraska City a wood burning steam wagon called the Walking Metal built by Joseph Renshaw Brown attempted to pull five wagons toward Denver. After a five mile test, a crank shaft failed and the journey ended, the machine later serving as a chicken roost at Arbor Lodge. Nebraska City residents recall the episode with pride and marked the spot with a poulder on the prairie race’s failure in 1862.

The fire, likely sparked by a tractor backfire, consumed several acres before neighbors helped. By day three of the Cheyenne county fair attendance set records with about 5000 on the gates yesterday and over 40,000 over the past two days. The educational hall, 4-H displays, and vegetable exhibits under C D Green drew strong interest, while Witt Milling of Potter showcased home grown wheat products. Cattle, hog, sheep, and poultry entries were strong though space limited. notable displays came from Walter brothers Gibbon Guernsey herd and the Johnson Herefords with blue ribbons.
