Whales Learn Quick Tricks from Beloved Trainer
French trained animal psychologist Kent Burgess teaches two female pilot whales at Marineland of the Pacific to perform. In ten days Bubbles, 13 feet long and 1,500 pounds, learned to jump seven feet and retrieve a life ring. Burgess uses reinforcement with mackerel and squid as rewards, comparing whales to porpoises and dogs in intelligence.
