Hotel Board To Discuss Finances In Sidney

The Sidney Community Hotel board will meet tomorrow to review a committee report from Lincoln. The committee heard from prospective operators and the $100,000 loan pledged by a financial agency. Funds on hand and borrowings still fall short of the contracted construction cost, with discussion on methods to raise more money. The contractor’s low bid remains tabled for another month while operators and lenders assess feasibility.

Wildcat Drilling Activity Reported Across Nebraska Fields

The report lists multiple wildcat and development wells across Kimball, Banner, Cheyenne, and Potter counties. Operators include Murphy Corp, Shell Oil, British-American Oil, Stanolind, Skelly, Calvert Drilling, and others with locations at Vedene, Vedene Stanolind fields, C-NW-NW-28-20N-53W, and Vedene fields. Several wells show shallow to mid depth readings with pay zones anticipated around 5,450 feet and notable activity at the Farr No 2 Jucls Field.

Cheyenne County Schools Open Amid Dartmouth

Cheyenne County launches the 1956-57 school year with almost half of students in Cheyenne County attending classes. Sidney schools begin Sept 4 along with football drills for Lodgepole Valley Association teams and local high schools. Teachers plan pre or in service workshops and the Chamber promotes Business Education Day. About 4000 students are enrolled across the county.

Sheep Die in Johnson Farm Tragedy Near Sunol

Deputy Kermit Brumbaugh reported 21 sheep died on the Lemoyne Johnson farm north of Sunol. A dog entered the pen, killing one sheep, and the remaining flock crowded a corner, leading to 28 sheep being trampled or suffocating.

Break-in at Brownson grain elevator blamed on youths

Young boys suspected in weekend break-in at the Brownson grain elevator. Deputy Sheriff Bart Taylor said the thieves drank four or five bottles of soft drink and took £2 in cash after entering through the bottom of a door.

Hub Cap Thieves Strike Two Cars In Sidney Weekend

Hub cap thieves were active over the weekend in Sidney. Maddox Motor Co reported four hub caps stolen during the night from a 1956 Plymouth. Mrs Mildred Haas of New York City told police three hub caps were taken from her 1956 Oldsmobile while she stayed overnight in a local motel.

Walters' Gain Show Honors Walters' Gain Show Honors

A Hereford bull owned by C. L. Walters and Son of Sidney won the grand championship at the Cheyenne County Fair last week, awarded by the Nebraska Panhandle Hereford Assn. Walters and Son swept Class A Beef Cattle with trophies for best three head and best pair of bulls. A traveling trophy for the champion female over all breeds also went to Walters for the second straight year. The Hereford Assn. grand champion steer prize went to Ron McMillen of Sidney. reserve to Clark Schaffert of Dalton amid about 30 entries judged by Martin Marshall.

Wheat Convention Committee Slots Are Being Filled

Nebraska Wheatgrowers Assn. sets committee assignments for the state convention. President Mannie Kreader announced active committees in farm program public relations research marketing budget and finance and nominating. The committee meets December 3 to hear delegate reports before presenting findings at the December 4 general meeting. The convention runs December 3 to 5.

Fair Official Jumps Gun On Rodeo Events

Warren Cunningham of Sidney, a Cheyenne County fair board official, was injured when a frightened cow broke from its stall during the fair. While helping corral the animal, the cow gashed his leg as it sidestepped, requiring treatment and transfer of handling to rodeo workers.

At Cheyenne County Fair a record 80 4 H animals sold with a record 50 cent per pound top price for a grand champion steer shown by Ron McMillen and a reserve by Eddie Robirds. Wart Baughman of Archer City Texas suffered a concussion chest injuries and facial lacerations after being thrown from a Brahama bull. Attendance was good but finances showed a loss for the fair board despite strong 4 H exhibits and merchant support. Wheat winners included Ralph Spearow Berton Cunningham and Raymond Walker with Cheyenne wheat taking grand and reserve titles. Thousands visited and praised facilities and entertainment.

Carnival Sued Over North Platte Fair Payment Dispute

Lincoln County Fair Association sues Joe and Dick King operators of the King Brothers Carnival for 1500 dollars alleging a contract to perform at North Platte from August 19 to 22 or 23 was broken after a telegram claimed the carnival was unable to play due to health. The suit cites profits the association would have earned had the event occurred.
