Drivers Licenses Go On Sale Next Tuesday

New Nebraska licenses go on sale next Tuesday September 1. All licenses expire that date with a 60 day renewal window. failure to renew requires a new exam. Price remains two dollars per license. probationary licenses for 19 and under cost 1.50 and last one year. A blood type space is added. Sen. A A Fenske sponsored the measure.

Margaret Ruhter 93 Pioneer Resident Dies in Sidney

Mrs Margaret Ruhter 93 longtime Cheyenne County resident died Tuesday at her daughter Rosa Ruhter home after a lengthy illness. Funeral 3:30 p.m. Saturday Gehrig and Son Funeral Home with Rev R L Townsend officiating burial Greenwood Cemetery. She was born June 10 1866 in Alsace Lorraine daughter of Peter and Susan Schifferns and came to America as an infant. Survivors include four daughters and four sons, ten grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

Thin Man Burglar Enters Through Vent

Sidney police investigated a break in at Gray's Town House. A burglar removed the roof air conditioner vent and entered via the vent. About 45 dollars in coins were stolen including 25 silver dollars and pennies. The coin box on a juke box was pried open and emptied. Lt. Ervin Smith said the thief stacked two tables and climbed back out through the ceiling.

Threshing Bee Draws Record Crowd In Bridgeport

In Bridgeport the Old Fashioned Threshing Bee attracted over 1,000 visitors, far surpassing last year. The event showcased about 50 pieces of vintage farming equipment including an 1884 Aultman and Taylor thresher, steam tractors, and early automobiles. Volunteers flocked to feed the thresher as organizers plan continued growth and non profit status.

Former Resident's Husband Dies After Heart Surgery

Dr Russell Stevens age 50 husband of the former Mona Livoni and brother in law of Carlo Livoni of Sidney died August 12 after heart surgery at Mayor Clinic. He was an optometrist in Sepulveda California where his wife and two children Carl Davis 19 Kathy Ann 18 reside.

World's First Conservation Stamp Goes On Sale Nationwide

The tri colored four center stamp bearing Soil Conservation debuts at the Sidney Post Office with a scene of a modern farm showing terraces strip cropping and a meadow. It marks a three day Soil Conservation Society meeting in Rapid City South Dakota with leaders praising soil conservation as a major development in farming.

Guy E. Berry Dies at 74 Funeral Set in Sidney Nebraska

Guy E. Berry 74 died Tuesday morning after months of illness, at Memorial Hospital. A Cheyenne County resident for 35 years, he will be buried in Greenwood Cemetery after a Friday 2 p.m. funeral at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife Josie Nellie Miller, a son Wesley Berry of Sidney, two grandchildren Virginia and Wesley Jr., and two sisters Morrs Peterson of Fremont and Jerry Wank of San Diego. Funeral arrangements are by Gehrig and Sen Funeral Home.

Polio Cases Rise by 78 in State Health Report

Eight more polio cases were recorded Tuesday by the State Health Department, bringing the total to 83 compared to this time last year. Six new cases were non paralytic and two were paralytic, with most patients around 29 years old.

South Pacific Aquacades Presented At Sidney Pool

A public water show titled South Pacific Aquacades will open Thursday at 10 am at the Sidney pool. Eleven girls and four boys trained for six weeks under Ruth Franss of Lodgepole. The program features synchronized swimming, diving stunts, and exhibitions. Transient Loses Fight Leads to Jail Time

A 25 year old transient named Paul Dore spent 30 days in county jail on intoxication resisting arrest and disturbing the peace after starting a fight north of the 13th Street underpass Monday evening. He bit the ambulance driver and struck him at the hospital before two officers subdued him. Authorities said assault charges may follow.

Aid To Disabled Not Recoverable From Estates

Lincoln The attorney general's office rules counties cannot recover aid to the disabled payments from a decedent's estate. Cheyenne County Attorney F L Balderson sought the opinion. The law has no provision for such recoveries, and courts would disallow without authorization. The opinion adds that a claim for general relief paid to a wife would be against the wife's estate.

JC's Undertake Selling Of New 50-Star Flags

The Sidney Junior Chamber of Commerce announced a project to sell the new 50 star flags to Sidney businesses and residents. JC President Henry Meysenburg said the Jaycee board approved the plan at a Tuesday meeting and timing and prices will be set once flags are available.

Third Charge Filed Against Sidneyite

Jack Jacobe of Sidney appeared in Cheyenne County court on an assault charge and pleaded not guilty before Judge C W Smith. He was bound over to District Court on the assault charge with bond set at $300 and had already been in custody for earlier charges including a bad check and habitual criminal case.

Ferris Preble, Sidney's youngest mayor, sells Preble's Supermarket to Food Centers Inc. Jack & Jill, effective Sept. 13. He plans to resign mid October to pursue teaching in California after assisting through September. Gross assures no business interruption and a new manager will come from Jack & Jill.

Scottsbluff Death Ruled Self-Inflicted Tragedy

Scotts Bluff County Coroner Straight Townsend ruled Evelyn Garnier age 19 of Scottsbluff died by her own action after jumping from a speeding car on Highway 86 east of Gering. Driver Roderick Prue 21 was charged with drunk driving after dispute with Garnier prior to the jump.

Firemen responded to a trash fire spreading to dry grass at 1119 Quince Street at 1 40 p m Tuesday. The blaze was brought under control with no damage reported.
