Cheyenne County schools prepare for fall as Sidney registration begins with seniors registering Thursday Aug 28 and younger students in following days. Dalton district opens a week later while rest start first week in September.
Mabel Nielsen of Sidney was honored at the Nebraska Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs full board meeting. She received the National News Service Award, one of four nationwide. About one hundred women attended the two day event. Mrs Edna Ude of Grand Island presided as state president. Mrs H C Hanna of Superior, past president, was endorsed for a national BPW office. Elizabeth Belke of Crete was named secretary for the southwest BPW for the 1948 Cheyenne meeting.
Col M A Quinn at the Kansas City Quartermaster Depot states next of kin control final disposition for World War II dead. Decisions cover funeral director, honors group, service nature and location, time, and the $50 burial expense reimbursement. government supplies casket transport from overseas, a headstone, a commemoration flag, and a military escort.
An Andrew Hansen sale set for next Friday August 29 will be at the Hansen farm one and one fourth miles east of Dalton starting at one o clock Col A B Rapp handles the sale with The Dalton State Bank as clerks Attendees are urged to note the corrected location rather than Gurley.
The Sidney Country Club will suspend catering through September 2 while manager Mrs. Peter Nielsen is on vacation. The clubhouse remains open for golfers to access rockers as the annual championship tournament boosts activity for the next two to three weeks.
Early census compilations for Sidney in the new county directory suggest a population over 5,000, with a likely unofficial figure around 5,200 and a gain of about 600 from last year. Housing shortages and crowded conditions in Sioux Villa prompt city leaders to seek small industry sites and FHA housing support, including 25 to 50 homes under Title Six for veterans, amid rising nationwide applications for new government housing units.
The Chamber of Commerce approved early purchase of decorating materials to prevent last minute shortages. Gordon Tobin and Vern Livingston were authorized to order spruce roping and an enhanced lighting system for the city auditorium, the utility building, and possibly other buildings. The junior chamber plans a home lighting contest, with Tobin coordinating with the Jaycees to avoid clashes.
A three car collision on Highway No 30 eight miles west of Sidney injures Mrs D H Johnson 49 Englewood Calif with a broken arm both wrist and shoulder burned and her car overturned pinning her arm. Passengers include Mr and Mrs Frances MacLanders and J Gerstner. Other drivers were Ivan Walker Dalton and G V Yarney Ordville. State patrol investigated. report not ready. Mrs Johnsons car belonged to Mr MacLanders and they were bound for Boston.
A series of skeet shoots will be held Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm at the Skeet range on Sioux Ordnance Depot starting August 31 and continuing through October 12. Spectators welcome, shells provided, access through the main gate to reach the range.

Southeast Gothenburg E. T. Young Hershey. Deputy district governors are F. F. Hamilton Bridgeport R. D. Hughs Ogallala and John Rowland Farnum.
The Denver University School of Theatre presents The Bluebird at Fox Theatre this Thursday at 3 pm. A lavish stage production with 35 cast members and 100 new costumes follows two children on a Christmas Eve quest, discovering they already possess the Bluebird.
Farm women in Nebraska will sponsor a statewide Rural-Urban understanding program during August and September. Mrs. John Linds, chairman for the Associated Women of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation, prepared materials for 300 Community Farm Bureau organizations across the state. She urged city women to understand country life progress as half of farm youth move to cities, stressing welfare through training, education, and sound health. Activities include plays, conferences with town and city women, and invitations for organized city groups to attend Community Farm Bureau meetings.
The Wheat Belt Electric Membership Association has leased a two year space at 938 Jackson, formerly Drs. Grimm and Babbitt offices, to house its REA administrative offices. The local affiliate will push its program in Cheyenne, Morrill, Deuel, and surrounding Nebraska counties plus Logan County in Colorado.
The University of Nebraska entomology department notes Hessian Fly infestations reach Chase, Perkins, and Keith counties and advises delaying wheat planting to mid September. In the southeast, infestations remain light but precautions are urged to prevent buildup. Unusual summers increased fly numbers in western areas, now reduced by heat and drought. Control steps include plowing infected stubble, destroying volunteer wheat, and sowing after the fly safe date.
An IRS official said Michigan’s new community property tax law is legal and constitutional. The bureau expects similar laws in Pennsylvania and Nebraska to take effect Sept 1 and Sept 7. Michigan’s act, effective July 1, makes 11 states plus Hawaii with community property provisions for tax purposes.
Postmaster John Martinosky announced an extension of city mail delivery to Illinois Street between 17th and 21st Avenues and Jackson Street between 19th and 21st Avenues effective September 2. About 25 families and several businesses will receive delivery. residents open during delivery hours must install mail receptacles and file an order at the post office to start service.
Nebraska Savings Bonds sales for the first half of 1947 totaled 87,214,576 dollars, up 68 percent from 1946, with maturity and redemption totals down 14.1 percent. Statewide per capita sales averaged 63.38 dollars, while Cheyenne County led with 1,055,733 dollars in E Bonds and 1,523,154 dollars in E F and G Series, a per capita 160.25 dollars.
Reunion at Lodgepole features all day program with an eleven o'clock parade, 1 pm old timer’s program in North Park, and an air show between twelve and one. Committees promise successful festivities with Rapps rides, flower show, Legion concession and $25 grand prize for top community events. Long-time attendees register as crowds from Sidney and vicinity expected.
The Sidney Public Utilities board approved a blanket ten percent raise for all employees at its last meeting and deferred a bondholder related sale proposal. Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. seeks permission to purchase the utility offices building adjacent to the telephone property, potentially merging the facilities for expanded equipment space.
The county treasurer reminds the public that the second half of the 1946 real estate tax becomes delinquent September 1. Real estate and personal tax for 1947 is not payable until November 1, 1947. Distress warrants are now being issued on all personal taxes for 1946 and prior years.

In the Sidney Country Club opener, Don Jorgenson upset Clark Grieve 2 up after trailing by two at nine holes. Jorgenson rallied with an even-par back nine, posting a notable score to claim the top match. Dr. C. B. Dorwart defeated Harry Marsh 5 and 4, Roy Thomas outshot Dick Grigsby 8 and 6, with all first round flights required to finish by Saturday and finals set for Sunday, September 14.
Electric service is being installed in the administration building and one hangar as improvement proceeds. A well pump was installed last week replacing the old wind mill structure sold earlier. With electricity the field may qualify for the CAA training course. Additional levelling may be done south of the hangar area to make room for more hangars if needed.
The county board issued a call for bids on road maintenance gear including two heavy two ton trucks a three yard hydraulic dump box diesel motor grader with cab heater electric starter and lights and a 1936 GMC truck offered in trade with trade in value to be determined after delivery of the new trucks
County Treasurer Herbert Stevens says the new licenses provided by the last legislature will be ready for sale on September 8. Old licenses expire September 1, but new licenses cannot be sold until a week later. He urges all drivers to obtain a license in September to avoid arrest for driving with an expired license. licenses will cost two dollars.
The region cooled to 47 degrees Monday morning as a shift from heat to autumn began. Sidney was the cool spot, with scattered showers in places while eastern Nebraska faced lingering high temperatures. Farmers in the Sidney area anticipate a larger wheat seeding and relief from the gruelling summer, with government incentives and more land under cultivation. Crop prospects look mixed as corn stresses rise with expected 95 to 100 degree highs elsewhere.
Gordon Tobin secretary of the chamber of commerce urged an earlier membership campaign for 1948. He proposed starting and finishing solicits in December so roster is ready by January 1 and a budget committee plan expenditures for the year. A reserve fund could cover events like the teachers convention every four years and December drives may yield stronger responses and higher total membership.
