City inspector Dean Starr reports nearly 100 Sidney residents face a four year old ordinance banning unlicensed motor vehicles left open. About 138 vehicles were found north to central Sidney with letters sent and 11 day deadlines set. Violations may incur fines, towing fees, or storage costs if not remedied.

Carpenter backs write-in bid to reclaim state seat

Former State Sen. Terry Carpenter signals a write-in campaign to regain his Unicameral seat, resigning June 1 after losing the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor. He says voters urged him to run and would consider chairing the Appropriations Committee if elected. Senator Richard Marvel of Hastings is the current chair and Republican gubernatorial candidate.

County figures released show climbs in Cheyenne County levies for most communities with Sidney posting the largest jump. The overall levy rises to 10711 mills, driven by a 994 mill increase for Sidney and a 329 mill county rise, while Dalton lowers its share. Park visitors rise at Scotts Bluff and Agate Fossil Beds

The National Park Service reports higher visitation at Scotts Bluff and Agate Fossil Beds National Monuments in western Nebraska, contrasting with declines at other parks. May brought a 21.5 percent jump at Scotts Bluff and 33.5 percent at Agate Fossil Beds, with smaller increases in June and July and projections for August. Through July, Scotts Bluff logged about 97,000 visitors and Agate Fossil Beds over 5,000.
