Slaughterable stock and exports rise amid conservation efforts
From the start of the last fiscal year, our slaughterable animals were not notably larger than the prior year especially hogs. The rise in shipments stems from conservation and heavier animals due to farmer efforts. Allies exports reached 2,133,100,000 pounds versus 1,266,500,000 in the prior year’s same period, outperforming the three-year pre-war average. Cereals shipments to Allied destinations grew from 259,900,000 to 340,800,000 bushels in fiscal years 1916-17 and 1917-18.
Hoover cites wheat exports and wartime food effort
President Herbert Hoover notes Allied grain shipments for 1917 18 totaling about 141 million bushels of wheat plus 10 million to neutrals, highlighting reduced carryover and reliance on domestic production. He credits agricultural and urban Americans, especially women, for sustaining food supplies amid shortages and crop failures.
