Senior High Band Rehearsal Scheduled for Monday

Damages Heavy In Two Car Wreck

Officers Ott and Rupp reported a two car crash at 16th and Illinois at 10 20 pm Thursday. Edward Bergnar Sidney driving west turning south saw $150 damage to his car when struck by Grace Marie Hammar of San Jose California. The Hammar car sustained $18 in damage with no injuries reported.

Fires Reported in Sidney Both Incidents Cause Little Damage

Sidney Fire Department responded to two Tuesday fires. At 3:45 am a blaze at Buttes Furniture Store west Illinois began from a short in an air conditioner motor causing $25 damage. At 11 am a grass fire on Union Pacific property at 19th and Grant caused no damage.

South Divide School Plans Opening Monday

Trinity Lutheran school will begin Monday August 25 with a 9 am opening service and classes until noon. Full day sessions start Tuesday led by Miss Bernice Narjes, with 19 pupils enrolled to date, unchanged from last year, per Rev D W Behrens.

Federal Number For Highway 19 One Step Closer

DC Greer Texas highway engineer and numbering committee chair met a three member delegation from the International Parks Highway Assn in Austin to discuss federal designation of a straight shot route from the Rio Grande to Canada as a single number. He noted US 85 would remain separate and that a five member committee must agree with each state requesting the designation. The next committee meeting is in San Francisco on December 1.

Don Quinn Wrecks Auto In Accident Near Sidney

Sheriff W W Schulz reports a no injury crash near the Sidney Beef plant after a brake shoe struck the car driven by Don Quinn of Sidney. The vehicle, total loss, left the road and struck a bridge railing before ending in a ditch. Quinn was alone and the mishap occurred on the bridge north of the Burlington underpass.

Portuguese Wheat Team Visits Sidney on Ag Tour

A six member Portuguese wheat expert delegation led by Domingus Santo Jr arrived in Sidney for a Thursday visit. The group toured local wheat operations, met farm leaders, and discussed Portugal's wheat needs and farming share. They will continue to Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas before Washington, DC, and home.

Rauner to Lead Wheat Display at Vienna Fair

Bob Rauner a Cheyenne County wheat producer and Nebraska Wheat Growers Assn secretary has been chosen by USDA Foreign Agriculture Service to head the wheat display at the Vienna International Trade Fair September 7 to 14 Austria. He will be aided by a Colorado colleague with a similar post at Munich West Germany. Departure from Sidney September 2 includes orientation in Washington and arrival in Vienna September 4. The exhibit showcases gluten content blending data nut products and U.S. doughnut machines highlighting wheat and related goods to boost foreign sales and relations. Rauner plans to return early October after both fairs.

Second Mishap At Cement Plant Injures Paul Hakes

Paul Hakes of Sidney, operator at Ready-Mixed Concrete Company, was injured yesterday around 9 30 am while repairing a tractor motor at the cement plant. His right hand was struck by a fan blade, risking the loss of a finger. Hakes is hospitalized in Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital in satisfactory condition. his finger reportedly mangled and set for removal. This follows another accident this week when James Kaus lost an arm in a conveyor incident. his condition is listed as satisfactory.

Oil Field Hauler Fined in Cheyenne County Court

Roy Gollobith of Sidney was found guilty on two counts of hauling violations in the oil fields. Judge C W Smith fined him $25 and imposed $525 in court costs. other charges were dismissed.

Nursing Home Plans Set For Final Checks

Memorial Hospital directors will review revised nursing home addition plans with architect Frank McNett of Grand Island on Tuesday August 26. State and federal approval is needed under Hill Burton Act funds. A bid date is planned for September with completion hoped by late spring or early summer of next year.
