A 2 year old Sidney man named James Kaus lost his arm at the Ready Mix Company Plant when entangled in a conveyor belt. He was in fair condition at Memorial Hospital after doctors removed the arm above the elbow.
The third annual Western Nebraska Mineral Society Show will be at the National Guard Armory in Ogallala on August 30 31 and September 1. Nebraska's largest show features agates petrified wood Indian artifacts minerals and jewelry with rock cutting demonstrations. Open from noon Saturday to 5 p m Monday with extended hours to 10 p m Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.
The Dalton Volunteer Fire Department finished second at the North Platte Valley Firemen's Assa tournament in Scottsbluff. Minatare edged Dalton in a close rivalry while Gering won a water fight staged with Chadron department.
Farmers across Cheyenne Kimball and Deuel counties are urged to submit one peck wheat samples for the 16th annual Nebraska Wheat Show to be held in Sidney. Five divisions include Market Wheat Junior Grain Show Certified Seed Open Class and Sweepstakes. Samples must reach Sidney by an upcoming deadline to determine site selection for 1959.
Cheyenne County Nebraska and neighboring Cheyenne County Kansas rank among top US winter wheat producers this year. Estimates place Nebraska yields around six to eight million bushels with Kansas counties Sumner, Thomas, Reno also posting multi million totals despite adverse weather from grasshoppers to hail and heat. Western Nebraska harvest totals are projected at about 25 million bushels for the season while seeding for 1959 begins and soil moisture remains favorable.
Mrs Jane Pitman 87 died Monday at Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital after five weeks illness. She had been in poor health three years. Funeral Thursday at 9 a.m. from St Patrick's Church with Rev Thomas Siudowski. Burial Greenwood Cemetery. Funeral home Gehrig and Son in charge. Rosary tonight at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Born April 14 in Ottawa Canada, she taught in Randolph Nebraska and married William B. Pitman. The couple lived in Sidney and Dalton before retiring to Sidney. Survivors: daughter Mrs Geraldine Norine of Seattle son Gerald of Dalton and three grandchildren.
Two young doctors, Dr Donald E Wilkinson and Dr Raymond Olson, announce they will move to Alliance’s Single Clinic within a month. They opened offices in Sidney a year ago and will join Arnold G Burnham and Joh L Beattie at the Alliance clinic. Both are University of Nebraska School of Medicine graduates.

Sidney Draw Grass Judgers from Cheyenne County with Dryland Toughies 4-H Club won the Nebraska Range Judging Contest at Valentine, scoring 643 points to top 51 adult entrants and beating Riverside Ramblers from Cherry County. A Cheyenne County crash that killed three prompted talk of a statewide, tailored blanket system for rural road speeds. Traffic engineer Robert Meyers described a plan to standardize limits by road class, with dirt roads lower than maintained blacktop, and noted counties lack authority without state guidance.
Senator Kennedy of Massachusetts will address a September 13 fundraising breakfast in the Lincoln Hotel ballroom for Nebraska Senate candidate Frank Morrison. Theodore Sorensen confirms the date. Wesley Reifschneider and wife June of Lincoln planned a Sand Hills trip and learned the value of a packing lesson. June packed an electric shaver while Wes expected no outlets in trees. They found a double outlet near a Long Pine camping area, changing his mind on packing.
Scottsbluff area farmer Frank H Munroe reports 80 bushels per acre from an 11 acre oat field that was struck by hail seven times in June. He combined the crop last week and says it is the best oats yield he has had on the farm since moving there in 1946. Four hailstorms were severe and at one point he considered plowing the field.
Sheriff W. W. Schulz reports Joseph Lakner of South Bend Indiana confessed to the Lodgepole Garage and Elmers Tavern thefts after being found with part of the loot. He also admitted stealing credit cards at a Chappell station and abandoning them at Cheyenne County fairgrounds. Lakner, held in Ogallala, has prior auto theft and burglary convictions.
Cheyenne County reports 774 percent of its 1958 Savings Bond quota with $62,158 in July and $719,592 for six months. Region 16 counties total $275,000 in July, lifting regional and state totals. Nebraska leads the nation with 64.5 percent of quota achieved first half 1958, versus 52.7 percent national average.
Mr John A Davis of Gering will tour Cheyenne County to solicit funds for the Nebraska Children's Home Society. He notes 1957 care included 311 children and 103 girls in trouble, stressing every dollar helps provide care, happiness, and better citizens.
