Fatal Accident Prompts Patrolman Warning Near Scottsbluff
After a Sunday morning crash near Scottsbluff that killed a Bayard girl and cost a man from Angola an arm, State Safety Patrolman D W Church warned motorists of arrests and fines for four in a coupe and trucks without tail lights. He blamed the crash on four in the coupe and no tail light and said driving more than three people over age 12 in the front seat violates safety laws and will not be tolerated.

Green Leads In 43rd District Race
Early reports placed Charles D. Green of Sidney and Lester Van Pelt of Bushnell in a tight race for second. Later tallies show Green held a comfortable margin, winning second place to appear on the non political ballot against A. J. Miller of Kimball, the leading candidate.

Fewer Horses Due To Mechanized Farming
Nebraska farmers increasingly use motorized farming as horse numbers decline from 562,851 to 444,735 over four years per tax records. Tax Commissioner W H Smith cites dwindling feed as the cause and says tractors replace horses. average value per head falls to 36.85 this year while total horse value drops to 16,392,672.

Future Farmers Hold Convention In Sidney
District seven of the Future Farmers of America met in Sidney last Saturday with District Vice President Walter Fuller in charge. Cecil Nelson was secretary. Delegates from 13 western Nebraska departments attended. Wayne Judd of Stratton, state president of the FFA of Nebraska, was principal speaker. The group held an all day session planning the district program and coming year activities with Howard Deems, state FA advisor, present as advisor. Instructors accompanied the boys and led a district teachers meeting under L. D. Clements. Co. C. Minteer of the Nebraska College of Agriculture also attended.

Body Of Man Found Hanging in Granary Near Peetz
Funeral services were held for Johannes Andersen Omo a 51 year old farmer from thirteen miles northwest of Peetz after his body was found hanging in a granary on his farm Saturday night. Deputy Coroner said death was self inflicted. No inquest. Mrs Omo reported he left to spread grasshopper poison and did not return until the neighbor found him.

Two Sidney Teachers Seek Releases From Contracts
Sidney school officials announced two 1938 39 contracts may be terminated to allow Arvella Hansen to become a Chadron city school principal and Kathleen Jeary to join the University of Minnesota home economics department. Superintendent Liebendorfer said replacements are being sought and the board will release only if suitable substitutes are found. A decision was expected within a day.

Cheyenne County Farmers See Benefits From Acreage Cut
J H Campbell chair of Cheyenne County ACP explains 1939 wheat acreage allotment benefits to farmers. Staying within 1939 allotment yields payments of 25 to 30 cents per bushel plus a 10 cent parity payment, with loans likely at 60 cents per bushel. A 60 acre allotment at 12 bushels per acre yields at least $504 in income, with higher yields raising total per bushel income. Those exceeding allotments lose benefits and eligibility for loans and insurance. Enthusiasm grows as county reduction is about 14 percent, well below national averages.

Hail Losses Paid By State To Nebraska Farmers
State officials report hail losses totaling 2536.53 paid to Nebraska farmers for 1938 crop damage. Bernita Slaughter of the state department of insurance said payouts covered 21 counties with 1267.48 in premiums. No further hail insurance applications will be accepted after August 21 while policies end September 15. Cheyenne County recorded the largest losses at 1348.76 across four claims.

District Court Term Open August 29 With Judge Tewell
An equity term of district court is scheduled to open Monday August 29 with Judge J L Tewell presiding. Many new cases appear on the docket mostly city and county tax foreclosure actions. Six divorce actions have been added since the last term though trial readiness remains uncertain. The calendar will be set on opening morning. Forger Burke Sentenced After Guilty Plea
Buell Burke a transient harvest field worker was sentenced Wednesday to a three year term in the state penitentiary after pleading guilty to a forgery complaint. Burke forged the name of Herbert Hruska a Sidney farmer to a check. He had worked for Hruska prior to his arrest. Burke pleaded guilty before District Judge J L Tewell who passed sentence.

Subsidy Terms For Wheat 26-30 Cents
The Agricultural Adjustment Administration says it will pay wheat farmers a subsidy of 26 to 30 cents per bushel for meeting a planting program that calls for a 31 percent acreage reduction next year. The rate is higher than this year’s 12 cents. About 712 million dollars are expected to be available for payments. Additional crop programs include urging cotton growers to plant a smaller crop and a referendum on marketing quotas to limit sales. This year’s crop will be sold under quotas.

Storm floods damages homes and businesses in Sidney
A sudden flood caused by torrential rain and hail inundated parts of Sidney's north side Monday night. The Moore apartments on Grant street suffered heavy losses with three furnished units filled by seven feet of water. Kermit Moore Troy Smith and Mrs. Howard Rallens escaped after the door failed under water pressure. Other basements, including Fred George's on Forrest street, were flooded and a wall collapsed. Damage totals run to thousands, with electric appliances and furnishings ruined.
