State officials to tour Sioux trade school site in Sidney

Nebraska Department of Education officials will visit Sidney next week to inspect the Sioux Army Depot site for Nebraska's second state supported vocational technical school. They will review property, facilities and equipment and how to obtain title from the Federal government.

New Zealand Rotary Student Visits Cooperstown Exchange Tale

Denise Thompson, a 17 year old Rotary Exchange student from Upper Hutt New Zealand, spends two weeks with Jim Knicely in Cooperstown New York while recalling a year in the United States. She toured the Hall of Fame met Dizzy Dean and enjoyed high school activities before preparing to travel to California and on to her home in Nebraska.

Wheat and feed grain payments total $2 million this month

Checks totaling about two million dollars will be mailed this month to farm operators and owners under the 1965 wheat and feed grain programs. About 2,500 checks, averaging 680 dollars, go to wheat growers and feed grain claimants in Cheyenne County.

Col Harold J Preble Dies Former Sioux Depot Commander

Col Harold J Preble, the first commanding officer at Sioux Army Depot, died July 15. He arrived May 3, 1942 and organized Sioux operations, leading through World War II. Survivors include his wife of Whitewood South Dakota.

Books Donated to Three Cheyenne County Libraries

Three Cheyenne County libraries Dal ton Potter and Lodgepole receive reference book sets valued at 325 dollars for library use. Present for Dal ton and Potter were librarians Mrs Ernest Anderson Mrs Estle Nelson and Marilyn Schmidt and Mrs Avery Crow with Mrs Louise Martin. Lodgepole was unable to attend.

Schools Readying for Aug Opening Across Cheyenne County

School bells soon ring as Cheyenne County districts set Aug 30 openings. Superintendents oversee each school while several need more teachers, especially in music. Music teachers appear in short supply this year.

Religious Meet at St Patrick's Holds For Teachers and Laity

A two day religious workshop for Catholic and Protestant teachers and laymen is held in St Patrick's Academy Auditorium under Very Rev Vincent J Pelster. Sessions run 9:30 am to 3:30 pm with 8 to 10 pm evenings. Sisters from Salina Kansas direct the conference and will lead workshops in Alliance Hay Springs and Scottsbluff with nearby communities sending representatives to Sidney. The program covers teaching Christian religion to children and core doctrine.

United Fund Meeting Set for September 1 in Fort Sidney

The 1965 United Fund budget will be set at a special meeting on Wednesday September 1 at 7 30 p m in the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel. All organizations and fund representatives must attend to present the amounts needed for the coming year as the campaign is set to begin late September. Benny Hochman the general chairman notes Capt Edward George of Sioux Army Depot joins the board replacing Dale Kinney who moved to Illinois.

The regular district football rules clinic sponsored by the Nebraska Activities Association will be held at the Sidney Senior High School Auditorium Thursday August 26 at 7 30 p m A NAA representative will interpret Nebraska high school rules and changes from the past year A 30 minute film of illustrated rule cases will be shown Harold Chaffee meeting director invites players coaches officials and fans for an up to date explanation of grid rules.

Two Potter Farmers Suffer Severe Farm Injuries In Potter

Two farmers in the Potter community were hospitalized in Sidney after farm accidents. Normund Oberndorfer is in critical condition with a head injury from a moving irrigation pump joint. Wendel Mathewson is in serious condition with a severely cut leg after his foot was caught in a silage chopper.

Mrs Rusty Young Wins Telegraph Weekend in the Rockies

For the second straight week a Wheatbelt Public Power District employee’s spouse wins the Telegraph contest. Mrs Rusty Young, teletype operator at Sears, was drawn as the eighth vacation winner. Her husband is a Wheatbelt lineman. The Youngs live near Sidney with two young children.

Sidney Men Earn Ak-Sar-Ben Neighbors Honors at Rotary

Two Sidney school veterans were honored as Ak-Sar-Ben good neighbors at a Rotary Club meeting. O. J. Weymouth, retired principal, served 40 years in the Sidney system, and Vergal Winn has 22 years on the faculty. Weymouth was nominated earlier. Winn is the Cheyenne County recipient. 4-H group Wee Willing Workers, led by Mrs. Owen, also recognized. Guests included Wayne Lindell of Kansas City and Steve Hinrichs.
