Fort Sidney Days Fair Opens Weekend Galas

Cheyenne County gears up for the 1965 Cheyenne County Fair Fort Sidney Days with livestock shows, 4-H contests, a big barbecue by Potter Barbecue Club, a Lions Clubs parade, RCA rodeos, and a full slate of events from Sunday through Wednesday. Beoulevard activities include golf, a carnival by Forsythe Dowis, and a grand parade route to ease traffic and sun glare.

Area Rain Brings Moisture Across Cheyenne County

Rain fell across Cheyenne County and nearby areas ending a three week dry spell. Totals varied from traces to about a half inch with Lodgepole reporting the most at around 0.50 inches. Observers measured rainfall at Sidney Potter Gurley Dalton and surrounding locales as fog reduced visibility and flights were cancelled.

Deep Test Rumors Persist In Western Nebraska Oil Fields

Rumors say Sinclair Oil and Gas may renew a deep test in Banner County after a recent rig fire halted a prior venture. New producers appeared in Banner and Cheyenne counties as Ring West Petroleum and Janes E. Blackman reported casing on No. 1 Post GW NE Sec 26-20-55 in Foot Hills, and Sinclair on No. 25 Singleton Unit GW SW NE Sec 24-17-54 in Singleton Field.

Business Institute of Sidney Announces Evening Openings

The Business Institute of Sidney invites inquiries as two more evening openings are scheduled next week. The office will be open Tuesday and Thursday nights from six to nine p m.

Rites For John Hyde Saturday

Funeral services for John William Hyde 81 longtime Lodgepole resident will be held Saturday morning at the Craig Mortuary. Hyde died Thursday in Memorial Hospital after living in a Rest Home the last year. Burial will be Greenwood Cemetery with pallbearers named. Survivors include three sons two daughters a brother and 16 grandchildren plus one great grandchild. Memorial gifts may go to the heart fund.

Centennial Commission Heads Elected In Cheyenne County

Dick Thailing manager of Northwestern Bell in Sidney was elected chairman of the Cheyenne County Nebraska Centennial Commission. Mrs. LeRoy Hadden was chosen secretary as the group plans a county wide commission with members from each community to coordinate centennial programs. The meeting at the 4-H building was presided by Don Shriner of Lincoln who leads the Nebraska Centennial Office and urged grassroots statewide involvement for the 1967 centennial.

Jet Fly Over Set for Western Nebraska Air Fair

The Nebraska National Guard plans a 2 p.m. jet fly over in F-84s above Sidney Municipal Airport during the Western Nebraska Air Fair on Sunday, Aug 29. The event includes skydiving, military helicopters, soaring demonstrations, and various aircraft displays with no airport admission charge. A breakfast served 7 to 11 a.m. costs one dollar, with pancakes sausage eggs and coffee. The fair is co sponsored by the Sidney Civil Air Patrol squadron Overland Air Service and Sidney Chamber of Commerce.

Record 4-H and FFA livestock auction at Kimball County Fair

The Kimball County Fair 4-H and FFA auction saw the grand champion steer bring 50.00 per hundred with cattle averaging 31.50. Top hogs hit 45.00 per hundred and hogs averaged 37.00. Lamb top reached 85.00 with an 38.50 average. Maurice and Elmer Kath conducted the sale for fair officials.

AEC to Finalize Proton Accelerator Site Bid Soon

The Atomic Energy Commission is expected to announce finalists for a 250 million proton accelerator project. Sidney proposes using part of Sioux Army Depot, with Nebraska lawmakers backing Sidney and Mead area bids. The AEC may narrow 125 proposals by month’s end, as WNUCC leaders relay the update from Sen. Carl T. Curtis and WBN candidates.

Val Peterson to visit Cheyenne County Fair Monday

Former Nebraska governor Val Peterson, a leading GOP hopeful, will attend Cheyenne County Fair and Ft. Sidney Days next Monday arriving Sunday to appear at the Republican booth and meet GOP leaders. Peterson has served in high offices from local to national levels including ambassador to Denmark and federal civil defense administrator.

Fleming to stay for Sioux trade school briefing

Senator George H. Fleming, home after a seven month Nebraska Legislature session, will remain in town for a week to meet Nebraska Department of Education officials reviewing Sioux Depot as Nebraska second trade school site. He will attend a Thursday luncheon with Sioux officials and the Chamber of Commerce Industrial Council, then head to Grand Lake, Colorado, for a vacation. He and wife Sylvia will be honored in Ft. Sidney Days parade Monday. Fleming's trade school bill at Sioux passed, surviving committee and floor fights, and he co sponsored a state lands sale bill later vetoed by Gov. Morrison.

Old Timers To Register At The Museum

Old Timers register for the 1965 Cheyenne County Fair Fort Sidney Days from 9 a m to 4 p m at the Museum on 6th Avenue. Cheyenne County Historical Assn members run registration and serve coffee and doughnuts. registrants receive ribbons showing years lived in the area in six categories.

Cowboys Vie For Honors at Cheyenne County Fair Rodeo

With more than $5,000 in prize money at stake the Cheyenne County Fair Rodeo returns to Sidney for August 22 and 23. Previous champions include Lee Cockrell who earned $656 in the 9.8 second calf-tying feat and Jim Mihalek Marty Wood Ronnie Thomas and Billy Hale prize recipients in bareback bronc saddle bronc bull riding and steer wrestling. Pro Rodeo Association events drive national standings as 1964 posse set records with 591 rodeos and $3,665,469 paid out, outpacing PGA prize money of $2,865,017.

Fort Sidney Days Parade Opens With Colorful Floats and Bands

The 1965 Fort Sidney Days parade features 98 entries including 20 float-type entries, six bands led by the Rose Bowl-bound Sidney High School group, and royalty from Fort Sidney Days Lodgepole Old Settlers Day and Kimball. Prizes total 750 dollars with 100 for first in each of five categories.
