A millet and sorghum field day will be held Friday Aug 21 at the High Plains Agricultural Laboratory north of Sidney. The 1:30 PM program at the station administration building includes tours of test plots and expert talks on millet and sorghum development, varieties, feeding trials, weed control, and fertility by Nebraska and Scotts Bluff station agronomists.

Herman Miller Dies Aged 64 Weyerts Native Remembered
Herman G. Miller 64 longtime Weyerts resident died this morning in a Denver hospital. Born January 18 1906 he married Dorothy Lois Grimes in 1936 at Weyerts Church. He managed Gurley Telephone Co for twenty years. Survived by wife three sons Keith Bruce Gene Marilyn and two grandchildren. Holewick Funeral Home handling arrangements.

Three Mishaps Reported Over Past Weekend
Sidney Police investigated three accidents over the weekend with injuries to a young man. Rickie Tilghman’s car hit a light pole near Jerry's Drive In, injuring 20-year-old Doug Gartner who was hospitalized. A Larabee drive caused damage to Clapp’s car and Larabee was charged with failure to yield. Jurgens’s car was rear ended by Lafler’s pickup, with estimated damages totaling about 525 dollars.

Mark T. Vann, 19, Weaverville, North Carolina, is jailed in Kimball County on Navy desertion charges from Norfolk three months earlier. He was stopped near Kimball for a turn signal violation. credentials showed the desertion. Vann said he had been in New York City and was hitchhiking to California.

Hospital Use Down in Sidney Area This Summer
Public health officials note a satisfactory summer as Memorial Hospital records show lower hospitalizations and occupancy. July daily census averaged 35.3, down from June 439 and last July’s 49.1, cutting July occupancy to 47.7 percent from 66.3 in 1969. Medicare availability did not raise usage, and the over 65 census and patient days both declined.

NFO Urges $2.20 Peg On Millet
The Cheyenne County chapter of the National Farmers Organization calls on millet growers to withhold harvests until buyers meet a pegged price of 2.20 per hundredweight. An NFO spokesman says the price is realistic if farmers hold back, with harvest set to begin around Sept 15 and a good crop expected locally. Elsewhere conditions are milder, risking mixed yields in Nebraska and Kansas, making the price more critical.
